November OS Start Up Questions

I am getting excited about starting the EN OS on November 1. First I have to do LA Tri Olympic on Sunday 10/3 and a half marathon on 10/17. After that some easy weeks (it has been a long season starting with a January HM and Oceanside 70.3) and I'll be ready to go.

I've had time to go through lots of EN material - videos, podcasts, pdf files, etc. I've worked out the yearly spreadsheet, fiddled with a sig line, thought about an avatar photo, FTP and Vdot goals, and how to manage changes to my basic week.

My official start date will be 11/1. Do I wait until then to post all of these things? In particular...

1. When should I post to the November OS thread?

2. When to get set with right training plan (my training plan central says that I have no plan)?

3. Get feedback on macro planning - (I guess I'll post this on Trial Member Macro Thread)

   a. how to be ready for first double on 3/26

   b. whether mid-May is best a HIM or 3rd double

   c. if May HIM, could I manage a June double

4. Basic Week Questions

   a. My idea is to shift everything one day earlier

   b. Is it feasible to swap Sun and Sat bike rides? For me, the Sat ride will be on Friday and it'd be easier to do the shorter one.

   c. I want to keep swimming - it's fun and I still need to work on my technique/speed.

   d. Is it possible to do Tuesday intervals on a 2.5 hr hilly course?

    Whenever you want.

Coach P just put a link in, so go ahead and change your plan.  It asks for an end date, so check his thread.  I think it's sometime around the end of March.

    3. Get feedback on macro planning - (I guess I'll post this on Trial Member Macro Thread)

Yes, post these in the Macro Thread

       a. how to be ready for first double on 3/26

       b. whether mid-May is best a HIM or 3rd double

       c. if May HIM, could I manage a June double

    4. Basic Week Questions

       a. My idea is to shift everything one day earlier

No problem shifting it a day earlier

       b. Is it feasible to swap Sun and Sat bike rides? For me, the Sat ride will be on Friday and it'd be easier to do the shorter one.

Usually the OS only has one weekend ride.  The rides were typically Tues, Thurs, Sat.  Sunday was usually a run day.

       c. I want to keep swimming - it's fun and I still need to work on my technique/speed.

There was an OS swim hack for those who wanted to.  Keep an eye on this as many start out with good swim intentions , but then get caught up by the intensity of the OS.  Also remember ROI, but if you enjoy it have fun.

       d. Is it possible to do Tuesday intervals on a 2.5 hr hilly course?

If your training with power, just keep an eye on your watts and do the plan.  If you crush yourself on Tuesday, it may impact your ability to hit the rest of the workouts during the week.  Remember, the OS is very little volume for a reason.

Good luck.  See you virtually in Nov.

  • Just signed up for EN. Still consuming all of the info (won't take long). Quick question on Nov OS. Shaughn Simmons (a neighbor) recommended that I start the Nov OS for a May IM (IMSG). Your OS case study page recommends starting OS in Oct for May IM (http://www.endurancenation.us/blog/2010/09/29/the-outseason-and-season-planning-case-studies/).

I just finished the Austin HIM and a long season, so need the rest of Oct to transition/recover.

This is my first season of Tri and IMSG will be my first IM. Is it possible/recommended to start OS in Nov and still get in the right IM training plan for May?
  • @George, yes, you can do Nov. What we put up is "Best Case Scenario"; but you just raced. Downside is you need to recover, upside is you have fitness from late season race. I say recover for Oct, start 11/1. Put in the 20 week plan to end on 3/20, but you'll probably only do 14 weeks of it (8 x FTP, 6 x VO2), then transition out. The OCT start folks will end about a week after you would (we can fudge that if you want to sync up) and then you are all set. Welcome aboard!
  • Great news!  I'm all for whatever you reco for my IMSG in May.  Had a good race this weekend but didn't race my plan and got fueling wrong, so it hurt.  Intended to take Oct off to trans/rest.

Like what I've seen so far on EN.  Can I end my trial sooner so that I can get to work on the annual plan?  Intend to read the manuals tonight.

Really glad Shaughn pointed me in your direction.  Looking forward to a geat 2011 season!!
