FTP testing on Computrainer

Hi everyone!

I start my OS program tomorrow and have FTP testing as the first workout. I haven't been able to buy a powermeter yet but do have a computrainer. I'm planning on training on the computrainer this winter and will purchase a powermeter sometime in January (tax money!) So, I've read some threads on analyzing Computrainer data but I can't find any info on exactly how to do the 2x20'(2") on the computrainer. Is there a certain course that anyone uses? After you warm up, do you completely restart the course when starting the intervals? I would appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks!

  • Brian, I used to do my FTP testing on a Computrainer. If you have the ERG+ software it is easy to set up the test. And it is very convenient. A slight disadvantage is that you have to guess your FTP and hope you can keep up with the programmed resistance. Even if you do not get it right the first time, my experience is that on your second test you will get it it right. And then during the season, when I retested, I  increased my FTP by a few % points, until I finally plateaued out. It is not quite a "clean" test but it worked well for me. Adrian

  • Another way is that I use the computrainer 3d software. I create a flat course for a distance that I'll never hit. This way I can do thing as start slightly slower and then ramp-up. Don't forget to calibrate after warming up the wheels. Last thing that you want to do is perform a test where the CT is not set-up correctly.

Also, I would say that the CT threshold will be slight different than the PT threshold. But all things being equal (or for me) they tend to be in the same direction--which is the CT is about 3/4 watts lower than the PT.

  • x2 on creating a flat course in the 3D software.

  • I would also recommend the WKO software. Ride and then save the CT data. The Coaching Software will allow you to "export" it and create a text file. This file can then be imported directly into WKO. The software is a very powerful analytical tool and a great place to accumulate power and pace data.
  • I always test in the Coaching Software (CS) and then just analyze the 42' test period in WKO+.  I use the CS in manual erg mode and use the controller to adjust load/watts. I have used the Erg FTP test in the past and would not recommend it.

  • I do it the same way Brian does using the Coaching software and then WKO to analyze.
  • I've had my CT for 6+ years, and I've yet to ride a flat course--and that means for testing too. I try flat on a training ride every now and then, and just very much dislike. I have several self-made courses that I load for testing that have some undulation--nothing crazy, but what I would find in real life if I were testing outside on a "flat" course here in NE.  I tend do better, and get better results on "terrain" than riding flat. • Thanks for all of the input. I'll be ready to hit in the morning!
