half ironman

i have a queation about half IM training, i train for a full ironman  and do a half at about 3 months prior to the full, should i have a taper before my half Im?  Also is there a specific plan for half ironman training and where do i find it.

  • I will be doing the same thing next year and I plan on not really tapering for the race, just maybe go easy friday and saturday beforehand. The big issue will be making sure you recover afterwards properly.

The plans can be found under training and you can select which plan you want.

  • Check out the Wiki post on adding a HIM to your IM plan- good stuff in there on the taper/recovery:

  • @Mike:

Subject to what the wiki says, my thoughts are :

It depends on which is your "A" race. If the IM is clearly your "A" race and the half is a tune-up, then don't taper; train through it. If the half is also an "A" race (i.e., you have specific race goals you want to meet regarding the half) then I'd plan a taper for it, so you're fresh for the race.
  • I think the short answer is that 3 months out, yes, you can treat it like an A race and taper. My own feeling is that if you're going to the trouble of doing a HIM, you should go ahead and "race" it. Besides, you can go nuts mentally focusing on the same goal (i.e., IM) for too long.

Some of the guidance in that wiki post is in reference to how to work it into the middle of an IM buildup, but that itself is only about 12 weeks long. You'll find that the HIM taper isn't so drastic that you can't go back to the beginning of the IM plan after a bit of post HIM recovery. It's a bit shorter in the week before race week and then pretty easy on race week..
