Infinit for newbies??

ok, have done all the reading on infinit. not sure what mixture i would order, but wondering why people (around here at least) seem to swear on this vs utilizing the ironman perform drink on the course.

seems to me that by using the IMP drink on the course, i can get my cals and water intake from 1.5 - 2 bottles per hour...

any thoughts?

  • I can't stand the taste of Gatorade. I haven't tried the new drink but can't handle strong flavors. I like Infinit because I can adjust the flavor. Also, a lot of people like to use one flavor on the bike and a different flavor on the run to avoid flavor fatigue.

If you are comfortable using what is on the course then go for it.

  • I think that the ability to control the taste, calories, protein, and sodium is extremely important for the IM bike. IMP isn't bad but especially with minimal sodium and no protein I find it's not enough for me. I did all of IMWI on just my concentrated Infinit mix, water, and some salt caps. Wasn't hungry, and made handoffs really easy.

EN has a customized IM mix, I think I added a few more calories, more protein, and more sodium to mine. We also get a discount too, check out the wiki.
  • Of course, everyone is different, but I also swear by the Infinit solution. I like being able to add my own ingredients in, especially caffeiene. Im a coffee addict and 17 hours is a long time with no Mojo for me. It is also the only solution that doesnt upset my stomach. I used it during CDA 09 and it was amazing. No bonk the entire day.

  • I've been searching to the perfect drink for a while. I switched to Infinit a couple of months ago because everyone was raving about it the guys who run it seem to be ok. I really like the taste much better than anything I've tried before - even at full strength (I'm used to watering other products down to cut the sweet taste). I just answered the questions (which are pretty basic) on the website to get my "formula". So far, so good.

  • I also like the ability to customize it and I like the taste. I make a concentrated bottle for the bike and then switch to gels for the run, mainly for variety. The discount is nice too.

  • So to add to the questions, I was looking at formulating and wondered, do people buy two formulations? One for long distance and one for shorter distances? I'm ordering this week and want to train with this exclusively if it works. Input?
  • Sheryl, I am a simple guy and two formulas would only confuse me more in an all ready complex world.

I use the same formula for all races from Olympic distance to IM.
  • I will echo the simplicity philisophy. As a TRI/IM newbie I used infinit while training for IMCDA 2009 after I kept having to juggle a bunch of gel packs, PB&J sandwiches, salt tabs, etc.... and hated it. I did know that I would need more than just Gatorade on the course. My formula takes away the need to carry anything else. On race day, I used three bottles concentrated with 2 hours of mix. I then grabbed water on the course to stay fully hydrated. On the run, I used what they had on the course. No nutrition issues.
  • One formula for me. You can call them, Mike is super nice and will help you put a formula together to suit your needs.
  • K. I'll call. Thanks for all the info even though I didn't start the forum
  • A concentrated bottle of Infinite simplifies the bike leg. I know I just need to take an oz. every 15min. the whole time I'm riding. I only use the aid stations for water as needed. I use the same formula at all distances as well.
  • I also love the customization. I like to weaken the flavor a lot because when a drink gets warm, the more flavor the more it tastes like crap. I also sweat more than your average bear so I really jack up the electrolytes. I also only get water from the bike aid stations.

For the run, I'll use whatever is on the course because I don't like to carry anything. The key is to train with that drink first. I bought some PowerBar Ironman Perform to get used to it. It doesn't taste great but so far my body is okay with it.
  •  I was able to up the sodium level and that freed me from carrying salty tabs at races.  One less thing to deal with on race day.  And I really can't taste the extra sodium.

As noted, if you call them they can help you get it dialed in.  And I use Infinit on the bike for 70.3 and 140.6 events.

  • If you are a lucky person and can use on course nutrition, then do it. I believe this is a challenge that Coach Rich is planning to undertake in 2011.

For those of us that get nauseated with strong flavors, or don't tolerate certain mixes, whatever- then Infinit has been heavenly.

I have a "weak" stomach and could NOT stomach Gatorade. I purchased the IM Perform and used it for run training. Luckily it worked for me, but only watered down.

So for IMWI, I used Infinit on the bike, then on course nutrition for the run, I also hate to carry anything. I also figured out ahead of time that the Lemon-Lime favor tasted awful, Mango Orange was OK, and fruit punch was best - again this was what worked for me, and I spent the time BEFORE the race- to nail my nutrition plan.
  • I started with a bag of the EN Distance formula to get a base line. I really wasn't sure what I needed. When I was ready to for another order, I setup a phone call with Laurie @ infinit (which is free) to tweek a formula that is better for me. I have a bike formula and a run formula. The change in taste and added caffine works wonders after 6 hours of the same drink.
  • Getting ready for RR - how much do I put in that one bottle on-board for a 6 hr ride? Concentrate X 3 and have a second bottle of same for last 3 hrs? And how much does it really take to get in that 250 cal/hr?

    Chuck:

Yes to the 3x and two bottles.  And you will need to calculate the calories of your particular blend and figure that out.  If your blend is 256 calories for two scoops then 256 x 3 = 768 for one bottle.  So you would drink 1/3 bottle per hour (I put a black sharpie line around my bottle at 1/3 marks so I can see where I am at).  You will need to adjust this if you are also planning on eating a gel (150 calories) or anything else each hour.  It really is simple math.

One note, a 3x bottle is really strong and it isn't water.  So learn to "sip" and not chug the bottle.  First time I trained with a 3x bottle I chugged and ended up with GI issues.

I also like to chase my 'sip" with some water.   That way I am getting the fluids and calories in at the same time.  No guess work.

    Hope this helps.

  • I don't know how fast you ride, but I'm over 6 hours for IM and over 3 hours for 70.3, so I mix my bottles 4x. At that concentration, one squirt/mouthfull works out about right for me. As John said, you definitely need water after some of the concentrate. Not sure how much you've looked at the Infinit site, but one of the key concepts is osmolality (basically how concentrated and how well will the fluid absorb once it gets to your stomach). Without the water, you would be in trouble. The only thing that I don't like about this approach is that you have to go to two bottles every 15 minutes or so. What I do like is that you can manage your calories and total fluid intake separately - that can be a big advantage. Good luck - don't forget your team discount.
  • @Chuck - I second what folks have already said... and agree that marking a bottle if you're going concentrated is key- otherwise one hour you'll have too much, another maybe not enough... that's actually why I put water in my speedfill and keep the infinit in a bottle - so I can monitor my progress and keep track...

To be sure I get in what I need in the right timeframe, I set my watch to beep at me every 15 minutes to remind me to drink (first a sip or two of infinit - then the water chaser)... Usually I can get through my third of the bottle drinking every 15".   But this is a personal preference thing, maybe you want to take smaller sips and drink more often... whatever....  as long as after an hour you've hit the first black line and are working on the second.

As other folks have said, the water chaser is KEY!  And, potentialy drinking more water more often as needed.  If you're taking additional sodium (i.e., an S!cap or endurolyte cap) you must be sure to drink even more water!  Kitima commented on my first IM RR report with all sorts of super useful information in this regard ... you might want to take a look:  http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.co...fault.aspx

  • Infinit sells bottles that have hatch marks on them which makes it nice and easy to be sure you are consuming enough on schedule. You might also check out this page: http://www.infinitnutrition.us/tv/intro.asp. They have a video about "how to carry 5 hours of Infinit." I think that is the video that talks about concentrated bottles.

If you choose to do this, you MUST practice it during your RR. That way you will learn if you can manage it. As others have said drinking enough water with each swig of concentrated drink is essential to avoid the dreaded GI distress.

I was skeptical of this type of fueling, but it worked like a charm for me during the Paris Marathon in April.
  • On the questyion of two formulas I don't adjust based on the distance of the race, but I do have one formula for bike and one for run.  I can handle more protein on the bike than on the run.  The protein helps with hunger on longer distance biking for me.  I don't mess with the sodium in my formula because I tend to adjust electrolyte balance based on the temps.

  • I agree with John, I have a different formula for the run with no protien and more caffiene. I also change the flavor b/c by the end of the bike I am tired of one flavor. I have called and talked to the guys and infinit and they have helped me customize my formula based on what I do and my size and likes. I would suggest giving them a call if you aren't sure. So nice to not depend on what's on the course, besides water.
  • I used the 3X for the second RR and had good luck, again. No big issues except that when I got off the bike at 6 hrs (with another 9 miles to make 112) I could not stand the idea of anything sweet. Used water only on the run (7 miles easy and could have kept going). Actually ate some potato chips as I started since that sounded good. So with 3 weeks to go to IMAZ, I will stick with the 3 X bottle and then add another at the special needs bag.
