The 4th Annual "Heads We Win, Tails You Lose" Thread
This is a fun little tradition we have, and easy way for PnI to boost free coffee, etc from you folks . Enter your stuff here or actually read the instructions below!
Here's the deal:
- You tell us some stuff
- We set some goals for you.
- I'm the Bike Meister, Patrick is Run Czar
- You don't meet yOUR goals = you buys us coffee
- You meet yOUR goals = you buys us coffee
Either way, we win, you lose, and we get cash for coffee (EN runs on coffee), which is really what it's all about anyway . So...

Are you training with power on the bike?
Tell RICH:
- Your current FTP, if known

Are you training with heart rate on the bike?

Rode a lot this year, as you know. I was very unstructured. Did almost no steady FTP work. Lots of roadie rides with high VI. Saw some bigger numbers in WKO+ but never really factored my FTP. Saw Peak 20 and 30's of 260 NP or higher. Peak 60's in the 250's. Wasn't vigilant with my data. You rode with me once.
Did minimal running this year and focused on the bike. Ran very frequently but with not much intensity. Been picking it up for the last 4-5 weeks and feel great.
Historical best 322
Current weight 187
6 feet
39
5 or 6 years in 3 with power
Historical best FTP, if known => 304
Height, weight, age => 5'9", 163, 49
#yrs in the sport and training with power => Tri = 6, Cycling = 10, Power = > 7 (didn't learn much about power until EN though)
Been riding seriously for about 4yrs and running seriously for about 9yrs
Never really trained seriously with either HR or Pwr before joining EN last month, although have played with HR from time to time (never really understood how to push myself)
Started training for tris in Sept 2009, did 1 Sprint, 2 Oly and one HIM in 2010 Spring/Summer, have run 9 Marathons (looking to start doing those again too)
goals for this year are to do 2-3 HIM, 2-3 HM and a M in late Fall (don't really enjoy the shorter tris as much, like the challenge of the distance) want to be ready to do a full IM distance race in 2012
According to my KK trainer pwermeter, which I don't really know how to tell if it is fully accurate, my FTP is about 220. have done 2 tests with different results and this is the lower number. I am going to retest in the next couple of weeks to try to get an accurate number.
look forward to any ideas you have.

vdot:44, been a runner forever but have knee problems that I am sorting out in the off season for the OS.
cool... my first go round with this challenge...
age 36 (37 in Feb); height 5'4, current weight 131 (too high... normal is the 128-30 range).
BIKE: I'm currently an HR athlete on the bike, but plan to get power in the off season (to start with Jan OS). In the sport 2.25 years. Only done 1 race 2x and will go back next year: Eagleman HIM. 1st year (non EN style ride) 2:56:56, 2nd year (EN HR Z3ish): 2:59:15
RUN: current/best VDOT: 39; been running distance (mary's and half marys) about 3.5 years; only been running about 4.5-5 years.
Carl Noftsger here, Altoona, IA.......Will be training this winter in the "Pain Cave"
I am 37 yo, 5"11" and 145-155 pounds. Current vDot is 49. Unsure on the other stuff d/t the fact I have never trained with a power meter....But the good news is one has been purchased and to be ready next week. I have been eagerly pouring through all the information, forums, and wiki's to try and learn the language so in time it will come.
I have been doing tri's for about 10 years but nothing serious untill this year. I did my first HIM (Kansas) and had a blast. Time was 5:48. Should have been better but after reading about all the bike info I know for a fact I fried myself on the bike but still held on to a 9:00 pace run. Nutrition was a HUGE factor. I have ran 16 marathons, 4 this year and ending my season on 10/10/10 at the Chicago Marathon. HUGE ITB issues with the right worse than the left. Looking forward to a break untill Nov first when my OS starts. Will be focusing on then my body mechanics, Yoga for stretching tech, and resting the ITB. I want to be ready to come out swinging.
My goals for next year are to PR at Kansas on June 12th with a HUGE improvement on the bike and being able to finish the run strong. Improve my vDot to the mid 50's and ride with power on the bike. I am doing IMWISC on 9/11/11. I significant day for me since I am a carreer firefighter but being able to finish the race in 13 hours or better is my goal. I HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO ON THE BIKE. I FEEL WEAK ON THE BIKE AND HAVE NEVER BIKED OVER 60 MILES.
MARRIED TO ALISON MY WIFE OF 11 YEARS AND HAVE AN 8 YO GIRL NAMED OLIVIA AND 14 YO BOY NAMED KEEGAN. THEY ARE MY PRIZE POSSESSIONS AT THE FINISH LINE

At my peak at the moment but taking the next 3 weeks off so expect my FTP/VDOT to drop due to taper/off time and outside to inside transition. I'll fill out the actual form in Nov with week 1 test results.

235 (current FTP) is historic best bike
Been in tri since 2007, which marks beginning of any serious biking. Got power meter in April 2008. This is first outseason with EN
Historic best 5K was last summer 19:33 = VDOT 51.3
Been running since about 1987, about half of those years semi-seriously, but obviously not THAT seriously, since my best times are in my mid 40s...

OK, I need to do this, not only because I really dig buying people coffee, but because I need someone to spit out numbers for me... if no one tells me what to do I may just make up my own wild goals. :

Folks, I have hit the spreadsheet to dole out the vDOT goals for all 60 folks who have signed up. Rich will soon do the same for FTP. You can view the coach "targets" in the spreadsheet here. If you want to play along and add your own info, please complete this survey, as we'll be checking this 1x a month for the OS. Thanks all!!!
