70.3 Phuket, Thailand ... anyone?

I have an opportunity to do this race in 2011.  Has anyone done this before?  Or more accurately, has anyone done the former Laguna Phuket, now WTC Phuket 70.3?

  • IT's definintely on the bucket list. 2011 could be a good year for it!!!

WTC owns it now?!? Geesh...world domination ain't no joke!
  • A buddy of mine did. Hilly, challenging, HOT and HUMID, but you can handle any of that and more. One thing that was unexpected--her run interrupted b/c an elephant was in the way, and didn't feel like moving. image

  • Laguna Phuket used to be in Nov---which is really nice time of year for that part of the world: relatively cool (like 88-92 degrees) and relatively low humidity (85%).
Phuket 70.3 is in March. End of Feb through beginning of May in Thailand is "summer" or the dry and hot season. By hot, I'm talking 99-120 degrees. It probably won't get to 120 degrees in Phuket (I've been in Bangkok in April--easily 120 degrees) because it's by the ocean but it will be HOT. And "dry" is still >70% humidity though the ocean breezes do help with that. Not trying to discourage you, but just wanted to give you an accurate picture of what the weather could be like.

I've had some friends of friends who did Laguna many years ago: It's hilly. The road surfaces can be rough---like roads in NY or IMWI (my uncles were civil engineers who worked for the Thai DOT). There was hardly any bike shops or bike mechanics in Phuket so bring your own tools. The water will surely be a non-wetsuit swim---just the most beautiful beaches in the world (yep, I'm biased).
  • I spent 3-4 days in Phuket in '98 while on an all-expenses-paid cruise of the Far/Middle East courtesy of the USMC. Great diving, great food.
