approve my TP for NYC marathon?

 Hi everyone!

I just ran the Hartford marathon this weekend and am looking at NYC marathon Nov 7. That leaves me 3 weekends for longish runs to the marathon. The marathon was Saturday and here is what I was thinking.

No running Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Wednesday-Run easy for 45-minutes

Fri-Run easy for 1 hour, maybe open up a little with some speed stuff

Sun Oct 17 16-18  miler (use marathon hack)

Sun Oct 24  12 Miles

Sun Oct 31 8 Miles

Nov 7 Marathon

During the week I will just do the normal Marathon Hack workouts.

What do you guys think?

  • Jerimiah - what was your time at Hartford, what's your goal for NYC and most importantly HOW do you feel right now? My personal opinion is that Hartford was your last long run for NYC and you could push yourself into an overtrained state by going 18 a week later. Here's my suggestion:

    Oct 17 - 10 miles - very easy!
    Oct 24 - 15 miles - 5 easy, 5 at MP, 5 easy
    Oct 31 - 10 miles - 4 easy, 2 at MP, 4 easy
  • Thanks so much for replying to this...

I did 3:31 in Hartford and would like to try for the same or better in NYC. Not sure what the course is like or the mob scene but I think I can do a little better than I did in Hartford.

It was my first marathon outside of an Ironman and I certainly learned some lessons. I like your idea for the coming weeks...

Responding to how I am doing now...feeling awesome, no soreness ready to rock. Just need to stop drinking beer!

Thanks again for the great feedback

  • If you are feeling awesome, then you probably didn't take it to your potential...but that's not a bad thing for your first. I would still not go 18 a week later. You could have deep residual fatique that won't come out until you push that limit...don't. You aren't going to lose fitness by taking an easy week right after the marathon. Back in the day, I've done a double (2:35 and 2:29 3 wks apart) and triple (2:53, 2:44, 2:35 in a couple of months) and you should be able to improve at NYC if you taper right.
  • @Paul-Thanks so much for the tips. Wow, those are some impressive times!!! Unreal! Cool, I will heed your advice and take it easy trusting that Hartford was my last "long run".

  • JC, do what paul said...he's got you dialed in. Other notes...you might need to fuel more frequently on those longer runs as you are more likely to bonk..just keep an eye on it!
