Race directing

Hello all, just looking for some insight here.  A couple nights ago my mother-in-law had a charity event for a Family Resource Network that specializes in helping out families who have children with special needs.  They do have a base such as Hospice, and they are always looking to raise money because there is a high need for it.  I thought maybe that a local triathlon might work to get all the proceeds for the charity.  Looking on line at ST's Dan Empfield's suggestions, it looks pretty difficult and something that would need planning now.  And, after all that, you might not make any money anyway.  But, the hope would be that in a few years it would bring some money in.  Does anyone have any experience in this?  I'm not looking to make it a WTC event, just basic stuff for all participants, no age groupings, etc., just something well organized with a good venue for those who want to race and no frills attached.  Thanks!

Dan

  •  Bump... Anyone????

  • I have no RD experience, but I have enough experience in the space to know I would touch race directing a tri, no matter how small or "simple" with your 10ft pole .

Good on ya for thinking about it, but how about starting with a 5k + kid's fun run?

  •  Because Rich, I'm always balls out!!!!  You may be right though, I'll think on it and talk to a local race director.

  • Think Dan Socie just became an RD I believe. Might be worth PMing him.
  •  Thank you Jennifer, I'll see what he might have to add.

  • I'm just catching up with this and now your PM makes more sense.

I'm with Rich. A triathlon is massive undertaking and will take years before you will making any money for a charity. Unless you are like me and inherit an existing event (Bike race) with a history, a list of committed sponsors, and pre-registered athletes then I'd stay away from a triathlon.

If I wanted to start any event from scratch I would start small. A 5K is perfect way to get going. Maybe an Indoor triathlon? I'm putting on a cyclo-cross race in 2 weeks. Which should draw 150 people or so. It's going to make a killing for anyone but it's going to be fun.

  •  Thanks for your input Dan!

  •  Dan- I just participated in the half Full Triathlon which raised money for the Ulman cancer fund- helps you adults with cancer .http://www.halffulltri.org/

They had some pretty big sponsors behind it ie Livestrong. I also saw lots of Rev 3 vehicles.

The major sponsor contributions allowed for a large portion of race fees to go to the charity. They did a great job for a first event. maybe you can contact them. It once started as an idea.........

  •  Exactly Tracey!  That's what I'm sayin'.  These events started somewhere, the only problem is I live in  rural area, I doubt Livestrong would be interested!  I will contact them though to see anyway.  Hospice is very big here and I would a ton of support for it, but they have huge fund raisers all year, one being in Cooperstown with major sports celebrities, the foundation I would be doing it for is much more lower scale in terms of people it affects in this community.... hence my idea to try and help.  As others have said, it may take a few years to get on its feet, and I don't know if the risk is worth the reward (not trying to sound selfish or just plain stupid) but its a reality in the kind of support we need in this area of NY.  Something I want to think hard about and maybe plan for in the next 2 years.  There is a big 10k here and I know the race organizers, they may be able to help out a lot, especially in equipment.  We'll see, thank you for your help.
