2011 Ironman Lake Placid – Endurance Nation – Epic Bike Training Camp

This is posted by EN athlete Dave Campbell...Coach P posting for poll options!

Last summer while visiting Charlottesville Va, I had the opportunity to ride on the Skyline Drive out of Waynesboro, Va. As I’m signed up for IMLP in 2011, this ride struck me as a fabulous training ground for the LP bike. I’m looking to organize an EN Camp ther next spring. This would be a 2 or 4 day option. Here’s the general plan. We meet up in Waynesboro, Va. This is the Northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Southern end of Skyline Drive. These are non-commercial roads that run through the National Parks, a very popular cycling area. Think low traffic, gorgeous views, lots of good climbing practice, ride with your EN teammates. Google these and you’ll find tons of info on them. Several commercial tour groups and high end coaching groups run camps and tours on these roads. We have 2 main options.

Route 1 leaves Waynesboro and the ride goes North on Skyline Drive to Front Royal, Va. This is 105 miles one way with about 8500’ of elevation gain. Here’s a link.  We overnight in a local hotel(Hampton Inn) Next day, return to Waynesboro.

Route 2 leaves Waynesboro and heads South on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Peaks of Otter Lodge. This is 86 miles and again around 8500’ of elevation gain. We overnight at the Lodge and return the next day to Waynesboro. Here’s a link.

If you do all 4 days, you will ride 382 miles and cover 34,000 ft of elevation gain. The grades are not all that bad though. You can see the details of the climbs on the links if you click the “Watch course fly by video” and click on climbs tab. Compared to the mapmyride course of Lake Placid, these are tougher routes than LP will be.

So, there would be a couple options, a 4 day camp that includes both routes, or a 2 day camp covering only 1 route. As for cost, you would be responsible for your own travel to and from the starting point, (Waynesboro), your motel reservations and cost, your meals, nutrition, etc. Basically I’m suggesting a do it yourself deal as far as money goes. I’m providing the logistics and organization. Once I get a feel for the attendance, I will call the hotels and negotiate the best rates. We would most likely leave cars parked at the Best Western in Waynesboro for the duration of the camp. I will try to arrange for a SAG vehicle and driver to move luggage along the route for us and cover any issues that arise during the day(Special needs for nutrition, breakdowns, etc). If someone has a volunteer for a SAG vehicle and driver, just let me know. We’ll pitch in to cover SAG expenses. What I need now is some feedback on interest so the planning can progress.

The main questions I need help with right now are:

2 day or 4 day camp? We can run both actually, letting the 2 day campers join the 4 day campers.

When to Start?

  • Start ride on Thursday(meet Wed evening), end on Sunday 4 day
  • Start ride on Saturday(meet Friday evening), end on Tuesday 4 day
  • Start on Saturday, end on Sunday 2 day

Preferred weekend (vote in the poll below!!!):

  • 5/15
  • 5/22
  • 5/29

The poll will be closed on 11/1 so the plan can be finalized and published.

Questions, just ask away!

  • I'm interested as this is in my neck of the woods (maybe 2.5 hours away). Also, I'm doing IMLP...

I will need to look at when there might be an EN  camp in Lake Placid so I don't crush myself to close together.

Thursday thru Sunday seems like a good idea if its a 4 day.

Overall, love the idea of using skyline drive as a training location. It is a great spot. I've only driven in a car so being on a bike would be cool.

  • I'm not doing LP in 2011 but the riding sounds great. Considering LP or cda for 2012. If the dates work I'm in.
  • FYI...

the first two options, 5/15 and 5/22, will conflict with ToCA and IMTX (if anyone is doing either of those).

    5/29 is Memorial Day weekend.

  • Yea, thought about that. I figured that this camp was an either/or thing. Probably wouldn't do ToCa and this one. As for Memorial Day, that could be good giving us an extra day to recover/drive back, or bad from a SAU standpoint. Guess we could just let the poll and votes tell us which is preferred. Just trying to figure out a time that would not be too close to LP, but late enough in the spring to not worry too much about cold weather and give us time to get ready for this. Also, its not limited to those doing LP, its just timed to be good for LP. Thanks
  • FWIW, Placid Rally looks to be on 6/10-6/12....
  • If this was in late April or early May I'd be all over it. I'm doing IMTX on 5/21 so none of those dates work for me.
  • I'm looking at LP in 2012. I would love to ride with the team if the date works. Memorial day is a family weekend for me.
  • I have an interest if May 15th weekend....5/29 doesn't work at will likely be in Lake Placid for a training weekend...Sounds like fantastic riding and would be great prep for IMCDA....
  • The 15th is American Zofingen. It is like an epic weekend of cycling all in one day with an epic weekend of trail running and good beer thrown in. All Northeast Folks racing LP should come and play. If you can do the middle distance in May the LP course will seem easy in July.

Memorial day weekend would never work for me and I think there will be a lot more traffic out there on that weekend as well.

    I guess I vote for 21-22
  • I am thinking of going up to lake placid 29th . So also would do 05/21-05/22
@chris read a bit of American Zofingen . Sounds really cool , and it is close enough to me. Might opt for doing that rather than 1/2 im to practice for lp.
  •  I'm definitely interested.

My wife is from Charlottesville and here Mom still lives there so there is a possibility I could combine this with a family trip and possibly help contribute to SAG support.

Let me talk to her about it but there will be great weather in May -  Looks like a good time to me

    Mark

  • Just bumping this back to the top of the list.  With a lot of newcomers in the last week or so, some doing LP in 2011, and the voting deadline fast approaching, just want to make sure nobody misses out on this.

  • Keeping this up there...
  • I'm doing IMLP next year and can do either the weeks of the 15th or 22nd. That leaves me a few weeks between VA and the IMUSA Rally. I guess I will be cashing in alot of SAU ...
  • I just joined EN and am doing IMLP 2011 and could very well be interested in this weekend. Haven't been out that way in a long time - but know its a great riding area...Don't know exact schedule yet for May yet but fiugure the earlier the better - Memorial Day weekend likely no good....Pete
  • I'm doing CdA next year and this is in my backyard too. I would prefer the earlier date of the 15th. Memorial day is family time for me. I bet I could get Ralph Butler to do it too as long as he's not in Afghanistan.
  • OMG - I live 30 minutes outside Charlottesville and was thinking of doing an epic bike blast about that time. I'm also signed up for IMLP! Perfect. I am tentatively thinking about doing the entire Blue Ridge Parkway which usually takes about 10 days in May! Perhaps interested parties might join me in doing the entire parkway. It is beautiful and has always been on my radar as something I'd like to do.

Please elaborate on this Blue Ridge parkway and 10 days of cycling?!?

  • Blue Ridge Parkway is 469 miles of curvy, two-lane road with lots of extended ups and downs and beautiful views. Minimal traffic, and I think 30-40mph speed limit for the traffic that there is. It starts in Waynesboro, NC just below Shenendoah Nat. Park and goes to Asheville, NC (where Smokey Mt. Nat Park is). It is fairly remote, with few services especially further south. I would like to do it as a bike touring trip with panniers. Haven't decided whether to go heavy and do more camping, or go lighter and credit-card tour. Credit card touring it makes it a bit longer and harder because the hotels are down below the ridge, meaning you start your day with a nice hard climb back up to the ridge! Of course, the heavier your bike, the slower your grinding up the grades as well, so maybe it's equivalent. Perhaps if Patrick does this camp, those of us interested could continue on to Asheville? I have the book, "Bicycling the Blue Ridge" which I need to start reading. The following is also a great planning site: http://www.nukefix.org/parkway/
  • Looks like my son is planning a wedding for 6/11. His plans are still only partially established and I still need to get more details....Barring any major changes I wont be able to make the LP Rally from 6/10 - 6/12 .... so, maybe this EBTC in May is the thing I should be looking into.

Have you settled on a weekend yet? Still able to include another rider?
  • wondering if there is anyone thinking about the 2 day option that would share a ride from the NYC area?

@coach P -> any update on LP Camp dates yet?

  • @ Scott - still lots of 'if and when' questions for me actually making it happen, but if I do, the possibility exists to carpool from NY to VA.... If you find a more stable offer, go with it. It may be a while before I commit.
  • OK, it looks like the weekend that includes May 21,22 will be the winner for this camp. I guess the next order of business is to decide on the 4 day option as to whether to start on a Thursday, end on Sunday, or Start on Saturday, end on Tuesday. Two day riders can do Sat/Sun either way we choose. Also need to start getting a feel for the number of 2 day riders and 4 day riders. If I can figure out how to do the poll thing, I will. Maybe Coach P can make that happen too.
  • Bumping this thing back to the top of the list. The dates are set for this as May 19th through May 22th. This will be Thursday through Sunday. Anyone wanting to only do 2 days can choose either Thur/Fri, or Sat/Sun. Coach P, you initially expressed interest in attending, hope thats still the case. Is there a suggested way to take this project to a seperate folder, stciky it, or something so that as the planning progresses from here, those involved can keep up with what is happening without it being burried in the General Training Discussions. Suppose I could set up a google group/Facebook Group, etc, but would be nice to keep it in the house for anyone who wanted to see what was going on. Again, this is a 4 day epic bike training camp on the Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive, centered around Waynesboro, Virginia. This is not the Lake Placid free camp to be held in Lake Placid.

Bumping this thing back to the top of the list. The dates are set for this as May 26th through May 29th.

FYI, that's Memorial Day Weekend, if that makes a difference for anyone. Lots of people will have the Monday the 30th off of work. That also means that places to stay, as the first 'official' weekend of summer, might be difficult to find - get looking NOW!

  • Thought the weekend was going to be the prior week, 21-22nd? Memorial Day weekend might make it tough in terms of SAUs and people with families. Anyway, Scott is right, better start booking stuff now given the Holiday weekend.
  • @ Scott, Bill,
Thanks for catching this mistake. I edited the above post with the correct dates. Sorry, between rushing at lunch to do this and O2 deprived this test week, I mis-typed. Don't want any conflicts with Memorial day.
  • This would be very fun. All climb and descend, lovely road and views, easy traffic with week end a little more crowded. If you drop off either west or east sides of the B R Parkway south of Waynesboro, you can pick up some steeper climbs. You'll get plenty of climbing anyway.

Peaks of Otter will book up fast. It is a great place to stay but I would pull the trigger very soon to get the rooms.

Front Royal (north end of the Shenandoah Park) has plenty of lodging, but mostly sketchy. I'd try for the Hampton Inn on the north side of town off route 66. A few minutes ride from the park entrance.

Waynesboro has plenty of rooms off of route 64, a few minutes from the parkway.
  • OK group, Coach P and I are moving forward with this project. I will soon have a new group placed in the community for us to communicate and plan this ride out. I am working with the Hampton Inn in Waynesboro, Va (540) 213-9500, the Peaks of Otter Lodge (540)586-9263, and Hampton Inn Front Royal(540)-635-1882 on lodging. We will start riding on Thursday morning, May 18th from Waynesboro and ride south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Peaks of Otter. We overnight there and return to Waynesboro on Friday. On Saturday, we will head north on Skyline Drive to Front Royal. We overnight there and head back to Waynseboro on Sunday. So far, I have confirmed pricing at the Hampton Front Royal of $89.10+tax-Ask for the AARP rate. So, as soon as I get rates from Hampton Waynseboro and Peaks of Otter, I will update this. You can choose between all four days, the first 2 days, or the last two days. This is really a heads up that the Blue Ridge/Skyline Epic Bike Camp is alive and moving forward. As soon as I get the group up, please join, confirm you attendance, and get pumped up for a great ride. I'm thinking this trip will cap out at about 12 riders just to keep the first run manageable and enjoyable. So, confirm soon. This is basically a do-it yourself camp. I will not be charging for it, you will handle all lodging, food, etc yourself. I have one SAG vehicle lined up (mine) and would appreciate if anyone else can help with this. Questions, just ask away!!
  • This sounds like a great alternative to ToCA, and less expensive and less vacation time! Plus, I've never been in that neck of the woods on my bike.

    Interested in seeing proposed mileage/day.

I don't know about Coach P though, because I believe that's the same weekend as the EN IMLP camp.
