Reindeer Run 5k

I was disappointed with my Turkey Trot, so I decided to do another 5k to see if it was just a bad race or if my run fitness really had slipped.

Race started out as usual, way too many 5:00 min/mile superstars that rush to the front and then blow up before the first mile marker.  I was probably in about 25th place a quarter mile in and had moved up to 4th by mile marker 1.  I went a little to hard in mile 1... about 5 seconds faster than I should of, but I decided that I want to race and needed to catch the lead pack.  All of mile 2 I was in 3rd place and within about 10 seconds of the leader.  Mile 3 came and the guys around me had a strong kick and I was flat and had nothing...so they pulled away and I held on to 4th place and 1st AG.  At least I hung with the 3 high school runners for most of the race.  FWIW, the course was 0.08 long and windy, but I still should be faster.

Anyway, it looks like the first turkey trot wasn't just a bad race and I have lost a little more than I thought but it's not so bad.  I peaked at a vdot of 61 last season and this race gets me a 59.4.  I'm going to drop my zones down to vdot of 60.

  • Way to hang with those youngsters, Matt! Still pretty fast.
  •  Oh yeah! That was fast! Nice job and Congrats on 1st in age group. Consider the VDOT drop your reward for making it to Kona- you totally deserved the rest.

  • Nice job hanging with the teens---You can represent us AARP folks anytime!

A 1.5 point Vdot drop is good for off -season. You'll see 61 again in no time!

  • wait I was hoping for some cute holiday race pics!!! congrats on the race! I don't think 28 qualifies you for AARP though!!! nice job. m
  • Congrats on the race. You will get your fitness back back to 61+ in no time. If I see that kinda finish time I know i must have missed part of the course!
  • That's a puny Vdot loss in the off season! No sweat. You'll be to 61 and beyond. Congrats Matt! Nice, nice outing.

  • Matt,

You're too hard on yourself.  After the season you had, you're supposed to chill a bit which results in coming off your peak, but you'll build again and probably surpass your old peak.  You don't want to drill yourself into the ground.

    And you still smoked it.

    Congrats,

    Dave

  • Fun race! And, Matt, to be fair, isn't it cross-country season? You were probably racing against doodes at their peak. And you challenge them in your outseason. Way. to. go.

  • As usual, thank you so much for all the comments and "talking me off a ledge" again. Now that I've read the comments and it is hours later, I'm much more pleased with my race and current fitness. Plus I relized that I did de-train and gain wieght for almost 8 weeks, so it is going to take a little bit before I am back to peak shape. I continue to learn more from the EN team everyday!
  • That's a pretty fast race! I don't go to too may races with 4 around the 17:30 or faster. Was it downhill image
