To all Infinit concentrators - Sticky hands?

I did concentrated Infinit using the 24 ounce Infinit bottles during my last RR.  It worked out well, but I got sticky fingers/hands that just got worse and worse throughout my ride.  It drove me nuts to the point of me planning on putting all 48 concentrated ounces in my PD aerobottle for the next one and using regular bottles for water instead of the other way around.

Does this happen to anyone else?  If so, what do you do about it?

  • Yep, same sorta issues. I guess I just got used to the sticky-ness from training rides and race rehearsals.

I got better at drinking in a such a way to minimize getting any excess on the bottle or my hands & making sure to close the spout of my bottle when I put it back in the cage.
  • Doesn't matter what the concentration, any spillage (bottles, hands, bike frame) will get sticky. HTFU, I say.

  • I use 24 oz bottle of sticky infinit concentrate and always have a bottle of plain water for drinking / cleaning up etc. I'm not using a PD bottle, I'm using torpedo mount for the water bottle and a down tube cage for the infinit bottle. Hope that helps.
  • I'm with Cary, I keep my Infinit bottle verticle behind the seat and the Torpedo only holds water because of this very reason. I had to dismantle my front break to get all of the sticky mess cleaned up. Infinit works for me, so I put up with the mess that it makes.
  • I put my concentrated Infinit in the Speedfill because the lid doesn't spill/splash as much. Water only in the aerodrink because that's what splashes the most. I still get some stickiness on my fingers when I refill the Infinit, but I'll take a sip of water and spit it on my hands for a "wash".
  • I do the same as Kitima and find it works really well. And will add a word of warning...had a concentrated Infinit explode in my fridge and didn't notice for a few days, then let it go a few more, and ultimately it took me 2 hours to clean the extremely sticky almost solid-ish goop off the bottom of my fridge. Not fun. Gotta watch that stuff, it can be a crazy PITA.
  • I don't care if the bike gets sticky. My hands are a different story. What Kitima and Jennifer say makes sense. Put half the total in the big bottle (in my case the two chamber aero bottle - bigger side = 34 oz so no real spillage) and refill once. One sticky contact, one quick water wash, done. Other half of aerobottle (~14 ounces) filled with water and spare bottle of water to refill small side as needed. Aid stations to replenish water supply.
  • Hi,

I am a chronic concentrator...and I don't think I've ever had sticky hands.  I'm not really sure why I don't, and you all do.  First, true confessions - it's been a LONG time since I've ridden my bike outside (really).  But I've run for 12 hours with a bottle in my hand the whole time (with a 6 hour concentrate)...so I think I get to play in the discussion.

Here are some things I typically do - squeeze the bottle when you drink, and then re-seal the top while it's squeezed.  This way you create a bit of a vacuum which will pull some of the drippy bits back in.  Another idea is to consider the Camelbak bottles.  They just don't drip.  And I don't mean when they are in the 'sealed closed' position.  I love these bottles for the insulation, and for the fact that they don't drip - ever.

As for a sticky bike - while I don't remember my hands getting sticky, I DID have to replace my bottom bracket once.  I asked the shop guy why, and he said: "You drink a lot of sugary/salty drinks don't you?  Well, that stuff rotted away you BB."  The point is - if your bike is getting sticky, do yourself a favor and keep it clean...or at least get a check up periodically on any places where the juice could be piling up.

  • knock on wood, I haven't had any probs since I started concentrating - which is about the time that I started the cage between the aero bars system.

That said, I end up with sticky fingers if I ever eat a gel... even when I'm careful.  What I've done -  is, if I'm riding, take a sip of water and spit it out on my fingers to rinse them off... not perfect, but it works to help keep my annoyance level minimized.

  • Hey Terry - To get my calories for a full IM bike ride, I use 2 water-bottles w/ 5 scoops each of my Infinit mixture. It can get a little sticky, but honestly, between the sweat and chain grease it's not too bad. I have found that I have to mix it before the race b/c I just make a huge mess if I try to mix it while in the course (I tried this on a race simulation a while back thinking I could keep it colder that way, but it wasn't pretty, and I had to wash my hands in the water fountain!)
  • I do what Terry does, put all my infinit in the large aerobottle (water in small) and put plastic wrap over the top and under the lids. Not too much spileage and if so it's on my bike and not me. I make sure to dump water over the bike immediatley after so I don't mess up the compents with yuck.

  • FWIW I rotted out a brand new set of front brakes within a year from not recognizing that I had gotten sports drink in them a couple of times and not washed it outfrom ye olde splish splash device. I'm now also on the "only water on the torpedo/aerodrink" brigade.

  • I have used regular water bottles with a three hour concentrated formula for a couple of years now with no problems or sticky hands.

When my bottles start leaking around the top it is time to toss them and pull out some new ones.
