@Paul, great observation on all accounts, could not agree more, you put the words to what I could not explain but have a full intent elevating the volume in bike and run beyond what is recommended but up to the point of sufficient recovery. It would be nice to have a suggested guidance on where and when, as well as when not to. Long shot, I will be after some fast HIM performances, sub 4:30 and further work on qualifying for Kona down the road.

In the wiki you'll find the Volume Strategy Series (under Self-Coaching). It's three parts talking about Volume, a Big Tri Week, and a Big Bike Week and how to use these as tools to strategically boost your fitness.
I agree with Matt & Carrie about placement of the RR. I didn't do an IM this year, so I didn't realize it had changed. I was skeptical about the second RR only two weeks before my first IM, but it worked great. I will probably leave the RR's at 2 & 4 weeks no matter what the plan says. I also agree that slower runners (like me) may need runs that are a little longer. I follwed the plans, and still ran out of gas after about 15 miles. That was about what I did on my 2.5 hour runs. I think some experience on what it feels like beyond 15 miles would have been useful. Just turning 60, I do seem to need a little more recovery. I think some guidance on how to include a rest day each week would be useful. For me, Sunday would work best, but I could always switch days around if I knew what the other six days were supposed to look like.
I have only done 70.3s in my career, so, my thoughts are specifically for the 70.3 plans. I think it would be great if you could add a little more insight into the swim resources...maybe have coach Rich talking over the demostrations of the swim drills to elaborate on what the 'point' of each drill is, and how we should be 'feeling'. I am not sure how you can really add a lot to the swim piece, but, that is the only area where I see an opportunity for improvement. I can't speak highly enough for how dialed in the bike and run stuff has felt to me.
Thanks everyone for your support and feedback. I have closed this thread and will be using this information with Coach Rich to plan out 2011. You guys rock!
Followed the Advanced HIM plans this year and thought they were excellent. There were several Saturday rides that didn't see all intervals done, but that's just learning how much intensity you can take and still recover. I did find that I had to stand down some 3 weeks out from each HIM, just recognition that my body was tired and needed recovery then, rather than playing catch up in taper. Again, outstanding job at writing the plans guys !
