Roller Races
Here in Iowa, we have this phenomenon of the "roller race" during the second half of winter. They are official races licensed by USA cycling (or whatever it is).
The basic idea is that it's a 2 mile time trial on rollers, where they have a pair of rollers set up side by side so people can go 2 at a time, and the rollers are set up to some kind of computrainer-type thingy so that the data are stored correctly.
I have never participated in these, in large part because I've been an old-skool LSD rider during the winter, had swim meets to lug kids to, and various other good excuses. :-)
IIRC, pretty average times are in the 6 min region and below 5.5 is really stellar. So, basically it's a VO2 max race.
Has anybody done these for fun?
The one bad thing that strikes me about it, as I think about it more, is that it's only about WATTS. The big guys have it rigged to win. No amount of w/kg matters all that much because there's no wind resistance on your body. I did see someone play with a power meter and tire inflation... rolling resistance was huge... highest pressure possible was most efficient to get speed/watt.
Just curious if anyone had experience or liked it, as it more or less coincides with the VO2 phase of the OS.
