No room for lock nuts on PowerTap axle?

Hello,

I recently purchased a used PowerTap already installed on a wheel.  Got everything set up for a test in the trainer and everything seems too be working fine.  However, I did notice some play in the hub - it could slide side to side a very small amount on the axle.  My bike shop guy said the cones on the axle had loosened up, and that there was no locknut on the axle to prevent the cones from unscrewing.  There is just the cone, then a washer, and that's it, on both sides of the axle.  No locknut, and there is no room to put a locknut on.  He is not familiar with Powertaps (or power meters of any sort for that matter).  So the question is, is this normal?  Is something missing from the way this was put together?

Thanks,

Jim

  • Jim - never heard of this problem. Have you tried contacting Saris. They supposedly have great customer service. I'm having a problem with my PT right now too, so hopefully this is true!
  • Thanks Bill. I did contact customer service, and apparently the older SL models like the one I have do not have lock nuts. Here is their response:

If this is a threaded axle than it is not an SL+. I'm guessing that this is probably an SL 2.4?  With an SL 2.4 (or the SL+ for that matter), it does not have any actual cones, just axle nuts that screw onto the axle. These axle nuts do not need to be very tight, just tightened to 12 foot pounds, so I typically suggest putting some Loc-Tite on the threads of the axle nuts to prevent them from loosening up and causing play.

By the way, the customer support at cycleops is excellent.
