groin pull or hernia

You know you're getting old when you sneeze and suspect you gave yourself a hernia.

Anyway...here's my story.  I suspect my body is just forcing me to take a week off. Did some running Fri, Sat, Sun.  Nothing hard.  30-60 minutes, no intervals.  On Sunday I finished my run with 30 seconds of striders.  No pain, no issues, no problem other than tight calves.

Monday I wake up, no problems.  Sitting at my desk job in the AM and sneeze a couple times.  I was in a bit of an awkward position when it happened...but I didn't give it any thought.  Shortly thereafter I notice some aching in my low abdomen/groin area.  Within a couple hours the pain becomes pretty severe during movement.

In the crease of my leg I can find very sensitive spots.  It is right on the top of my theigh and it feels like a muscle knot of sorts...but it is long.  It leads up into my groin.  If I massage that area it is very senstive to the touch.  But there is no bulging or anything like that I can see near my abdomen.  But when I am sitting still there is an aching pain near my kibbles and bits...and it radiates. Couging, sneezing or trying to sit up from a lying down position are like DEATH.  I'd rather choke and die than cough right now.  But I can bend over and touch my toes, and get back up without pain.

I'm concerned about a hernia as I know that can happen while sneezing.  And those sneezes are the only thing I can think of other than the striders that could cause this.  The :knot" is centered on my theigh.

Anyway, before I freak myself out and call the doctor screaming for surgery so I can make my date with the Nov OS group...I figured I would ask and see if others have experienced something like this.

  • It's a little hard to tell from your description, but if I'm understanding you correctly it's entirely possible that you have a hernia. A bulge wouldn't be on your abdomen, per se, but more of where you are describing the "knot."
On the other hand, you may have pulled a groin muscle.
Best bet if it persists is to get your doctor to check you out, since diagnosis is really by exam.

    Hope that helps at all?

  • Get it checked for sure, like ASAP! Please keep us posted...
  • I went to the doc 2 days ago as the pain kept getting worse.
I wish I would have waited 12 hours to the next day as it started getting better quickly too. Turns out it was a lower abdominal strain. This may lead to a hernia in the next couple weeks, but that should be easier to spot.

So I'm good for the moment. sneezing and coughing while sitting down still hurt. :-(

I should be back to normal for next week. I better be, my OS starts in Nov. I need at least a week of easy training to be ready for an FTP and 5k test.

    Thanks guys
  • Can we get a picture of this unique position so we can avoid in the future??? image
