Hip Flexors popping with Core work

I've been doing the core routines from the wiki (thanks Leigh!) and they are awesome.  But I notice when I do any sort of "crunches" ab kinda thing, I get a bit of a pop or hiccup in my hip flexors.  This especially occurs when I'm doing something like the "Froggies" or other leg raise/lower routine.  It doesn't hurt, but I'm wondering if I'm either doing something wrong or if I might be damaging something that could turn into problems later.

Wasn't sure this was really a "Medical" question so I've left it out here in the General Training area.  Anyone know what this little pop noise is and if it's something to be concerned with?

  • I have it too, esp post accident. It's muscle/tendons moving over your hip joints. Not necessarily bad, but it does tell you that you have wicked tight hip flexors and need to start working on them like 6 years ago. Like me!
  • Same here for me too. Post crash year mine are popping, crunching, and every other sound now and my PT said I may have to just learn to live with it since I really jacked myself up pretty good this year. (on both sides) My problem too was never worked on the strenching, rolling, etc... till after this happens.
  •  I'm another one with the popping, especially on my left. My chiro/ART said same thing as Patrick.

I'm another that needs to really be rolling/stretching etc EVERYWHERE. The roller/grid is will go from being my enemy to my bff

  • Patrick hit the nail on the head. It's not a bad thing (especially if it doesn't hurt)- just muscles and tendons sliding over the bones. image

the only time you really have to worry about it is if you start to get irritation or discomfort there. With the friction of stuff moving, sometimes it can get inflamed. Either way, probably time to start working on those hip flexors a bit more!!! image
  • Thanks folks! I should have know the answer was going to be "more rolling and stretching"!

Just rolling and stretching will do that? Anything MORE effective than others?

Scott-  Check out Leigh's AthletesTreatingAthletes.com site here for great advice on how to target the hip flexers.  This is my go to sight for all rolling and stretching!

  • @Scott- the key is to keep after it. frequency frequency frequency. especially if you sit all day. muscles "learn" that shortened position over YEARS. Two rolling sessions won't cut it. It doesn't have to be an hour a day, but it does need to be at least a little every day. As things loosen up, then it's a matter of balancing out the muscle groups to prevent it from coming back. image
