IM Wales

Just saw the website and it looks very interesting.  Any thoughts on doing an inaugural Ironman event?  I would think there would be issues as they work out the kinks.

  • There's always some hitch in a first year event. Do you live in England? I recall Sep being more or less the dry season when I lived in East Anglia, but I would plan for rain in Wales. Better check to see what the typical rainfall is there that time of year.
  • No, I live in US, it would be a destination IM.
  • Would love to do this one!
  • Sounds like an interesting destination. I've done two 'inaugural' IMs, and the organization of each was flawless. With the strength of the IM brand, I think the race will have plenty of quality control measures in place. As well, the venues are normally not new nor completely unfamiliar with a large-scale event; newer IM races seems to be built on existing and established events, where the kinks have long been worked out.

Only worry would be the dearth of vowels in Welsh words. You should bring extras.

  • FYI on the weather...sounds good!

Wales is beautiful at any time of year, but the soggy Welsh weather means that summer (June to August) remains the busiest time for visitors. Most of the rain is concentrated in autumn and early winter, with the worst of the downpours generally between October and January.

July and August is high season for Wales, coinciding with the major school-holiday period across Britain, hence attractions, accommodation and roads can get choked with visitors, prices are often inflated and even the kindest of locals can get annoyed with the crush. However, this is prime time for a long, lingering night at one of Wales’ countless festivals or a concerted assault on its highest mountains.

To beat the crowds, May and September are great times to visit, combining the best of the weather with the colours of the countryside, but without the clogged roads and accommodation rush of midsummer
  • I will be racing IM Wales this year. I was already planning on being in Scotland for a wedding a week later so I'm taking the family early to vacation and race. I will be traveling with a 2 month old and a 22 month old, should be lot of fun! Any other ENer's doing the race?
