Treadmill

If there is an existing thread for this, feel free to point me that direction, but I'm looking at dreadmills so that I can efficiently perform the brick workouts in 20 below weather rather than wimp out and skip em.

Sears has their NordicTrac treadmill on supa sale and I was looking at it yesterday.  However, I want some input on best treadmils.  Most reliable, doesn't jerk around that sort of thing.  I am willing to look on Craig's list, but not really sure what maker and or models to look at.  It won't get a ton of use but I think once it's in place the DH might start exercising again...hope springs eternal.

Thanks!

  •  @Sheryl:  If you lived near me in upstate NY, I may have something for you.  A local "ladies only" gym shut down a couple years ago after being open for maybe a year and they have 2 cybex treadmills sitting storage collecting dust.  I'd kill to get my hands on them but I'm lucky my wife lets me put rollers in the basement.  They are institution grade and would last a lifetime in a home.  Anyway, good luck and sorry I was of no help whatsoever!

  • @Sheryl, as a marathoner in Maine I needed something for the nasty months too. In the end I decided that 10 years of gym membership $$ could buy a really decent DeadMill. After much research I went with PaceMaster Pro. There better machines out there (more $$) but it is American made, powerful motor and has 10 year warrantee. Been using it for 5 seasons so far and still glad I spent $2K instead of $800 on Dept store stuff. My feeling is that most of the entry level stuff wont last long enough to get your full $$ worth.

  • @Dan...hmmmm....my father in law is heading to their house in Illinois (driving a large van) from Maine in about two weeks.... I might be interested in checking it out....

    @Steven, I'll check those out.
  •  Just drop me a line.  I'll talk to the person selling.  I have no idea what they want for them anymore and I don't want you to overpay.  so give me a heads up and I'll see what I can do for you.

Steve, we were out in Maine last year from Christmas to New Years.  EN did a Holiday Run Challenge and one day, I ran out to a light house and back.  My knees still hurt from zig zagging on those granite blocks.  We LOVE Maine.  Especially Belfast where we always buy Love Buzz coffee for he husband and daughters.

  • I would go with a big, powerful motor, long and wide platform. Everything else is extra. I bought mine used last year. A $3K machine for $500 that was being used as a clothes hanger. I love it.
  • I'm also looking into treadmills. I live in northern Italy and the winters are cold, rainy, then snowy. Also, strangely enough my border collies love treadmills. I saw the new livestrong models but heard that they didn't get very good reviews. I may be stuck buying one online given the local selection. If anyone has purchased a treadmill or large exercise equipment from anywhere online and had a good experience please let me know.
  • Wow. I would love to find $3K machine for 500. I found some ProMaster Gold Elites on Craig's list for a little over $1000. Dan, my e-mail is sherylwoodworth@mac.com if you are able to get information. I will check with the father in law. My husband might go out and ride back with him.
  • I used reviews at treadmill doctor.com and watched deals for about a month to land a deal that I was thrilled with last year. Identify the speed you need (ie. Will your 5k pace ever exceed 6minute miles) and pick one that handles that. The rest is capably reviewed at that site.
  • Here's a great thread with lots of info from the 3.0 forum.

Thanks Linda, I figured this one had probably been hashed over!

  • I am also seroiusly thinking about getting a treadmill. I went to a fitness store in my area and tried a few. I liked the Ture brand. I was told that it was the brand that most runners liked. It felt sturdy and solid. They are not cheap though! I liked the PS100. It would make my work out room complete! Well almost! No pool!

I am just wondering if a computrainer would be a better idea????? Decisions Decisions!
  • You can get by with a treadmill in the $1000 range without a doubt. Most specialty stores will sell you the myth thatyouneed to spend $2000 plus if you are any bit of a runner. Total bogus. Read the selection guideline at treadmill doctor. There was no combination of inputs I could give it where it would suggest spending over $1500.
  • Years ago I purchased the "best" treadmill the local "specialty" store had to offer, I can't recall how much it was but it was top dollar for a "long-term" investment, I think it was a True 5000 or something close to that. I hated it, after a year or so I asked around at our athletic club and found a guy who purchased and resold treadmills from hotels, athletic clubs, etc. I purchased a used commercial treadmill and have been very happy with it. My wife and I use it extensively. It is a Lifefitness unit. I would definitely recommend a used commercial unit, especially if you can find a trusted source and a unit that is in good or great shape. I think we paid about $2,000 for a $4,000 + unit.
  • Personally, if I could afford one (whichI can't image) I would 100% get a professional Woodway. It's like running on pine needles.

  • I got a FreeMotion Treadmill with WorkoutTV FMTL8505P on eBay last yr. It has an MSRP of ~$8,000 new and I paid ~$1,300 for it plus $200 for delivery. It has a few scratches and dents, but works great. It is a commercial unit that weighs about 700 lbs though, so I had to take it completely apart and then rebuild it once I got the pieces into my basement. I'll probably sell it with the house someday!
