Bike inspection: Gearing for IMLP

I've been reading up on the EN gearing guidlines.  I'm relatively new to biking and feel like I still need to ask the question:

My bike has a triple crankset 52/42/30

Rear Cassette (I'm a little confused) on the spec sheet says 7 speed 11-13-15-18-22-26-34T.  Its a Shimano CS-HG50.

Doing Lake Placid in July 2011...Do I pass the Bike Gearing inspection Test??

Thanks for the help..

  • Triple with a 34? Definitely pass.
  • Ok, me too. I had a compact 50/34 tiagra with a 9sp 12/26 and never like the gearing. This summer I had the LBS upgrade me to Ultegra derailers with a 52/39/30 and I LOVE it. I get more up top, more on the bottom and a sweet mid range that suits me in rolling terrain.

I have been wondering if I should upgrade to 10sp cog with a 12/28.

What about changing the 52/39/30 for a 54/42/30 - can that even be done?

    OK as is? Any suggestions?

  •  Is it really a 7 speed?  I did not think that shimano had made a 7 speed road cass in about 20 years?  Those triples will be fine for LP.

  • Chris, 7 speed is what the spec sheet says. Its a Its a Shimano CS-HG50.

    Thanks for the feedback.
  • Nate, count the rear rings for sure or post a picture.
  • Coach P,

Counted the casset on the rear of my bike: largest ring has 25 smallest has 12.

  •  how many cogs were there?

  • 8 speed Shimano with a triple and a 25 still passes.
  • Would like to keep all Ultegra-6700 on new bike but Shimano only makes either 12-25, 11-25, or 11-28 in Ultegra-6700. Running compact 50/34 upfront. Strauss, Chris G, and company, your suggestions between these three and comments re: appropriateness for Eagleman/Placid/Kona? Thanks!
