Cadence lower in the trainer?

I noticed this morning that its feeld easier for me to hit my watts with a slower cadence. Outdoors I ride at 95-105, but on the darainer its more like 82-92. Any one else see this happening? Or am I just wierd?

  • I'm the same way. I always chalk it up to adding faux resistance vs. natural resistance I encounter when I'm out riding. Plus, the mental aspect of chucking along at 90 indoors and not getting anywhere can be frustrating and I find that I'm more focused when I'm riding at a slower cadence inside.
  • Curious.... I ride on the Computrainer in ERG mode (new this year, I used to ride the courses) and find it easier to maintain my watts at higher RPM. I am cycling-limited, and suspect that the lower resistance at higher RPM is what makes the work feel easier for me. I have to make the effort to ride at lower cadence. I am hoping to increase my low-end efficiency.
  • I have lower cadence on the trainer, too. I have to do it to be able to push watts.
  • Ditto Noodle.

  • Same here.  Plus a more pronounced 'pull back' on my pedal stroke between 4 and 8 o'clock.

  • Yup, same here. I don't know that I "must" be at a lower cadance to hit the watts, but I do notice I naturally gravetate to a lower cadence on the trainer. I intentionally pick music with 90-100 beats per minute to help me pick up the cadence when I'm on the trainer.
  • Keith gets on my case all the time about my cadence on the trainer. Then I show him my cadence outside and in races and tell him to be quiet. image  Yep, lower.

  • I'm the odd ball. Slightly higher inside.

  • I'm like Hayes... I have a higher cadence inside than outside. More interestingly the gap has grown over the two last year. My inside cadence is usually over a hundred and outside I have droped to around 80.

Exact same for me. Outside I average around 80. Inside 95-100.

  • When I started using the trainer I found myself using a lower cadence than outside. For some reason in the past little bit I have been hitting a higher cadence consistently. Kind of like a switch went off and somehow my body went into a different gear. Now I am about equal outside/inside. Strange.
  • Started EN almost 3 years ago with high trainer cadence. These days I find it easier to hit my goal watts with lower cadence. Outside I am fine (or so I think).
  • Count me among the outside-faster crowd.
  • my inside cadence really depends on what gear i'm looking to hold. i try to keep it high, but sometimes i just feel in between gears and have to make a choice of really high (95+) or really low (82-). Overall I've been trying to work on higher cadence as it makes my legs feel less sluggish during bricks.
