computrainer-ergo versus free modes.

This question probably asked before but can't find this exact theme.

For doing my intervals of 260 watts.

One way is using ergometer mode and dialing in 260 watts.

Other way is using a Real Video (or the computer generated graphics mode) and attempting to keep my watts at 260 watts.

Are these two ways roughly equivalent?  Assuming I keep my rpms the same.

Seems the ergometer mode would keep one more honest.      And easier concentration wise because if one is moving the pedals, the work is being done.

thanks.

  • I use the Coaching Software and write my intervals. Keeps me very honest. Hardly ever use the courses anymore. Just load the workout and pedal.

Here's an easy web app for creating the files.

  • x2 what Matt said. With an ERG file in coaching mode there is no try you either do the work or you quit. Very effective and painful.
  • Thanks for the info.

Now if someone could please answer my question.

  • sorry, i thought we did. yes, the effort you will put out is the same and you understand it correctly. As you mentioned the differnece is with 3D you control if you are pushing 200, 260, or 300 watts, where as with ERG/Coaching software the CT forces you to push 260 watts by constantly adjusting the resistance.

Therefore it is really up to you. Matt and I, plus many others have good luck with ERG mode as it forces us to do the work, others dorn't like it.

Try both out for the first week or two and see what you like more.
  • I think they are equivalent, don't know what more I can say to answer your question. Through the years, sometimes I use ERG, sometimes I use a course. My DH and I make up our own courses from some mapping software of rides in our area. Lately, I've been using ERG b/c I've been in the mood to do so. Then again, I think there's lots to be said for holding the watts on a CT course with  "terrain," as you have to do outside. That's trickier, just like riding in on the roads. I also find when I go back outside, a bit of "road feel" is preserved. When riding a course rather than ERG, no doubt it takes paying more attention to get your hit your intervals numbers--just like you have to to outdoors. It's good to switch it up sometimes, IMO. It's a long winter here for me.

  • Thanks all.  sounds good.

  • Matt,

Thanks for the link for the erg file builder.  Very easy to use.

Interval workouts are now spot on and highly effective, in a painful kind of way.  Do it or quit...those are the choices!

I'm really getting to use more of the capabilities of my computrainer now.

  • Yes, I like the programmed erg mode. I think it helps my mental six pack because I know that I will be doing the entire interval at the exact wattage with no let up no matter how slow I pedal. It shifts my focus to making sure I maintain a high cadence and good pedal stroke.
  • You are asking if x watts = x watts. The answer is yes. As an example, 1=1, 2=2, and 250=250. :-)

As some have said, mentally it can be a bit different, so it depends on you. Personally I have a quarq and CT and have noticed the CT watts varying throughout the workout...so I don't lock myself into a number with Erg mode. I have also personally found that I struggle to maintain a higher RPM at higher wattages in erg mode, but not standard mode.

I think they both have benefits, so I will use both. However I tend to use erg mode on lighter wattage settings like z3 stuff as a way to force that work. I don't have any trouble pushing through the z4-5 pain. I'm a bit sick and actually enjoy the pain of z4/5.
