PT can't find hub

Well, the annoyance level with PowerTap & Saris goes up a notch....again.

The cave was all set up.  The bike was cleaned & lubed, fan was ready, PT was working fine as of a week ago.  Today...nothing!

Fresh batteries did me no good.  Learn 1, learn 2, nada.   Swapped out HR straps to make sure LYC was able to receive data, that worked fine.

No transmission icon, hub doesn't appear to be putting out data.  I'll have to call Saris tomorrow, but I imagine this will involve paying shipping & paying for reworked internals.

I guess the OS is getting delayed.  Annoying.

  •  I would change the batteries in the hub to confirm that first....

  • I had to change the batteries in my hub recently. I had similar problems (I think). HR would connect but not the hub. As a results of the hub not connecting, the unit went back to sleep pretty quickly. I was worried about changing those hub batteries, but it was much easier than I expected. It just took a few minutes to open it up and swap them out.
  • I did change batteries in hub & lyc, but am unable to learn hub ID after the battery swap.

lyc sees new hr strap, so it is able to receive some sort of data.  my guess is the hub is not transmitting.

i'll keep the thread updated after i speak w/ saris tomorrow, this can be very frustrating.

  • Did Saris clear it up for you?

Did you make sure the unit that holds the hub batteries was put back in securely?  Sometimes it won't sit correctly if it isn't snapped back into place.

When you get your unit to relearn the hub ID jot that number down and it'll be easier to manually enter the hub ID number when you switch out the batteries again.  If you are relearning the hub to the unit make sure there isn't anything else nearby that is transmitting a signal or it confuses the PT.

  • Ed, I saw your post on ST also. If you get no joy from Saris (you will), please call Wheelbuilder. They'll get it done for you.

  • Thanks for the thoughts Kevin.
I'm at work, so I hope I can catch Saris this afternoon after work before they close.
One thing I didn't think to do last night was to pair the lyc with my PT disc to isolate the issue (training wheel hub vs lyc).

I've swapped batteries out before without issue. Either my hubs or my lyc have always been a bit finicky when re-learning, so I'm afraid something finally crapped out.

I know the ID of my hub by heart at this point, assuming it kept the same ID after I swapped out batteries, but I still wasn't getting any transmission at that point either.

Not exactly a seamless process here. Hoping Saris has some guidance. As nuts as it may sound, I'm itching to get my testing done & season rolling.
  • Thx Rich.  Joe from Wheelbuilder actually gave me his info on ST, so I'll consider them option #2 after Saris.

I'm trying hard to keep the glass half full right now image

  • In the event anybody is following this thread, or perhaps to preserve it for posterity....

In brief, my PT is now working fine.  Saris customer service was great, as I was led to believe it would be.

For whatever reason, we had to wipe PowerAgent & reload, make sure I was on latest software.

Took the battery out of the LYC & let it sit for a few hours to wipe any temporarily stored data.

Updated to the latest firmware on the LYC, learn 2'ed the training wheel, and it worked great.

So I'd recommend the above steps if you ever run into a quirky situation like this.

I still don't understand how an update like this changes anything, as the send-only hub shouldn't know the difference, but if it works properly, I'm not going to question the man behind the curtain.

Thanks all for your help.  Can't wait to get the OS rolling tomorrow, albeit a few days late.

    Rant = Over.
