Clearwater RR ( only 1)

I got lazy and didn't post RR plans for Clearwater, which I did last Saturday. Since this is my 4th HIM of 2010, I felt like I pretty much had the process down. Nothing new on nutrition, just go down and get it done...test 2 things...85% of higher watts due to test last week to see how run legs would feel, and, reduced need for hydration due to cooler temps.

Drove down to Charleston to ride/run flats. Started at 9 am, 50F temp. Goal watts 262, goal run pace 7:30.

Outcome- 261 watts and 7:28 pace. Legs felt better/stronger at end of ride, really good for first 4 miles, work last 2. Took in 700 cals on bike and 80 oz fluid plus 6 scaps. No cramping at all during bike or run. No fluids on run and I believe that started to have an effect , certainly won't do this in race.

Overall very pleased with effort as its been a long year...A race was NOLA HIM on April...but, feel very good physically going into next week.

  • Good luck, Bill! Clearwater was my 5th HIM last year. The Gulf was 80 degrees on Friday, but should drop into mid to maybe even low 70s by your race. A cold front is coming this weekend that will cool things off. Meanwhile, tomorrow's high is 87...and it's sum, sum, summertime!
  • Thanks Paul...Clearwater will be HIM #4 this year....just get that water cooled down for us, will ya ? I need the rubber blanket.
    GOOD LUCK at IMAZ !
  • That's the great thing about doing HIM racing, you can race multiple times in a season and use one race as the RR for the next. Have a great time in Clearwater and enjoy a little break from all things triathlon for a while afterwards. You really have had a loooooooong season
  • @ Bill - So, I did an open water swim in Tampa Bay with a friend this afternoon. We parked one car at Crabby Bills then drove out the causeway, parked and swam point to point across the arc. I checked the distance on mapmyrun and it was about 3800 yards if I had gone perfectly straight (did it in 62:32). Anyway, what you want to know is how warm was the water. This morning they said it was 77, but it was a hot, sunny day and I doubt it was much below 80 when we started right after 5pm. I had brought a shorty and a speed suit and wore the latter to keep from getting cooked. A significant cold front is coming this weekend with lows around 48-50 and highs 70-73. That should knock the water temperatures down to wetsuit legal...plus the gulf is typically a couple of degrees cooler than the bay. But don't expect cold water. I typically start wearing the shorty about mid-Oct, and here it is in Nov and I'm still in the speedsuit.
  • Thanks Paul...sounds like you're ready for IMAZ, except for the cold water ! Good luck out there.
I'm driving down next Tuesday so I'll swim it Wed. Thanks again.
