IM St George 2011

I would really like to do St. George Ironman for 2011 for a variety of reasons...   However, I am doing IMAZ this year.  Goals for St. George would be simply to finish ahead of the cutoffs & have fun, enjoy the scenery as best I can.  I realize the time between the two races is pretty short.  But hopefully not impossible.  Thoughts??

  • I did IMFL2006, then IMAZ2007 (when it was still in April), five months.
    IMFL06 13:51:22
IMAZ07: 13:51:25 (only 3 freaking seconds slower, darn people walking down the chute didn't allow me to PR!)

You've got a lot of base fitness post-IMFL, even after the post-IM downtime. Make sure to take your few weeks of low-intensity/no working out, ONLY fun stuff. Consider it a mental recharge.
Keeping movitated through the winter months can be challenging, but doable. Esp if you're from the northern climes, where you can only train indoors.

Plan on doing any EN OS?
What's your overall goals for 2011?

If you want to just go and have fun at IMSG, then I say go for it.
If it'll cramp your other 2011 goals, be too expensive ($$$ or SAU), etc, then I'd say not. Gotta look at the big picture, my $.02.

  • look at you Julia!!!! Good for you! Sign up for it, take some time off, then go at it. My only warning to you - don't know if you trained much in the Jan-Feb time frame. It's obviously better than most places because it's So Cal, but it does get cold on some of those longer rides if you leave early. And not as many people are out doing them so it's even more boring. It was one of the things I'll throw into consideration for the timing of my next IM, if there is a next...
  • I don't think they are too close, but I'm nuts. On the other hand, St George has me skeeeeered...especially the cold water. Do it and tell us what you think.
  • @ Paul - Yes, the course has me shaking in my sparkling silver space boots, but that is precisely why I want to do it.  And cold water is my nemisis.  Bring it.

@ Adam - I am very easily entertained.  I've got some funny photos of me all bundled up before my morning rides in the winter.  I am going to invest in one of those light-up-everything-for-an-acre headlights so that I decrease my chances of hitting a rabbit like I did last Feb.

@Scott - sweet.  That was just the data I wanted to know.  I am in Southern California, so things aren't as bad compared to the rest of the country, but yeah, we can get some sprinkles every now and then.  Motivation is likely not to be a problem, esp since I am still a newbie to the EN haus and am still glugging on the kool-aid.  Overall goals for 2011, a hilly ironman course (for an additional challenge, but NO PR-ing).  Did IMAZ last year, tapering for a repeat this year.  The thought of any other course that is remotely flat just doesn't sound as appealing as IMSG.  This location is actually quite feasible in terms of $$, & I can get good race support from the fam as well.  The plan for the rest of the year... will need a little more pondering.

    Thanks for the thoughts!!!

  • Julia, DO IT - Here is why I say that.

This is my second year doing IMs coming from ground zero base. This yearI did IM CDA a new PR, and 8 weeks later did IM LOU and beat my IMCDA time by over 32 min in 94 degree heat. So the 8 week turn was fine. From LOU I went to Kona (wooohhooo!!!!) 6 weeks later. I noticed the fatigue in the legs at that race. I’m 54 years young and recovery becomes a bit more of a challenge. So the turnaround your are looking at is doable!!!

I am considering doing ST George also – the run is what has be scared out of my shoes!

  • this dawned on me on my run today. Have you thought about trying to do a full OS rather than another IM? I am doing Oceanside 70.3, and I'm bummed I signed up before joining Team EN because I want to have an offseason to just get faster. That may be a greater investment and then come back to do St. George the following year. I guess it all depends on the goals, right?
  • Isn't it great how things come to you on a run or a bike?  I have tinkered with the OS question as well, but I think what I will want to do is tackle St. George now, and depending on how that goes, then do an OS.  Granted I will most likely be all bass-ackwards from everyone else in the haus, being on my own off season when everyone else has in season, but that doesn't really bother me.   All I want is to finish St. George, not really be especially fast.  Then for my next race (which will probably be something flatter again) I could address the fast issue...

  • that seems like a good plan! just make sure at some point you get some rest so you don't get burned out. as you know, that is what i struggle with, so I'm looking forward to a good break after IM AZ! hopefully catch you at IMAZ this week! good luck (or maybe see you on the ride today image
  • If anything - putting a race on the calendar so "soon" after IMAZ will force me to rest more so than normal.  If I had not a whole lot going on and a long time until my next race, I would probaby tinker around and rest less from boredom, if that makes any sense!!  I don't know if you heard me yesterday - I saw you in the back bay - I was just finishing and you must have been just setting out.  I am excited and nervous and all stressed out at the same time.  Hope you are enjoying your day off today!!
