Antibiotics 2 weeks before IMAZ....

Arggghhhh.....

Have had cold last 10 days or so, was able to do all training through last Thursday including 3 hour bike, Doc put me on pretty strongantibiotics for 10 days since she was tired of hearing me cough at work (of course being an ER nurse means I live among the germs)

So, I am not a big fan of antibiotics and am panicking a little since this will be Day 3 with no training except one yoga class and walking the dog, am going to try and ride the trainer tomorrow......

I know it is taper time, but can't remember the last time I took off three days! Guess i am feeling torn between resting or pushing through.....

Suggestions? Similar experiences?

Thanks

Stacy

  • Take the time off, get lots of sleep, drink lots of orange juice----and most importantly, don't worry about the training. There's nothing you can to do from now until your race to increase your fitness. Better to be over-rested than sick and dehydrated on race day. The cold is your body's way to telling you that it needs rest---give it what it wants because you are going to ask alot of it very soon.
    Hope you're feeling better!
  • +1 to Kitima. It isn't the work that you do in these last few days that will get you through the race but the months you've put in leading up. At this point it sounds like the best thing you can do is fully recover from that cold and give your body some time to recover. I'm sure it's frustrating, especially if this is your first IM, but you'll be doing the right thing.
  • I was on antibiotics two weeks ago and I did IMFL yesterday. I was fine. I took a couple days off to rest. You are not going to really gain much fitness two weeks out anyway and not taking care of your illness could have lingering effects. The pros far outweigh the cons.
  • As a physician myself (anesthesiologist/ICU doc) I completely agree with everyone. Look at it as a longer taper and optimize yourself for race day by being the most well rested and hydrated that you can be.
  • Thanks to all of you for your wisdom!

@ Kitima: Thanks for your response, not a big OJ fan but bought some Vitamin C...... so now I will think of you while popping chewable C as well as S-Caps in 2 weeks!

Will try and be zen and listen to my body

@Bob: Congratulations IMFL, woo hoo! Sounded like a day of unexpected weather, hope you are feeling great and am relieved to know you were in the same boat as me 2 weeks out......

@Jeff: Yes, first IM so more tweaky than most......am trying to put it all in perspective, your reassurance was great!

@Tim: So it is true that nurses and doctors are the worst patients, I am tempting non-compliance.....will rest and hydrate, thanks.
