New Seat: V-flow Max Plus

I just put a new seat on my TT bike and love it: John Cobb's V-Flow Max Plus. I was using the Adamo and had good luck with it but was looking for a seat with the same support (ie: no numbness) but with a longer nose. This saddle fits the bill.

Disclosure: I have no affiliation with Cobb or the manufacturing/distribution of the seat...just in case someone is wondering.

  • My saddle woes and endless searches could fill a book. That saddle works perfectly for me too!

  • Vince/Linda...why did you pick Max over the other Cobb models ?
  • It looks similar to the Adamo but is longer and has that blunted nose to keep any pressure off the "tenders". The Adamo didn't allow me to move around as much and redistribute pressure and it frankly just tore my skin up because of the lack of options to relocate pressure. The V-Flow Max Plus has a less steep rear aspect of the seat also, which makes it easier to sit back when climbing. Works for me. Thought I share.

Linda...glad it works for you too. I have 5-6 seats with very low mileage if anyone is looking?

  •  I rode this saddle at IM Florida. It was okay; I suffered for a couple of hours until everything went numb and then I was fine. This seems to be the best I can do for TT saddles.

  • Whoops. Spoke too soon and I apologize. I have the Plus. For me, that little bit of drop off at the end also made a huge difference. I need a new saddle for my roadie, so I'm going to order the Max. More of a drop-off at the nose might be even better.

Seriously, my saddle hunting saga once had me literally crying real tears trying to limp home of the Adamo--and I've had four babies! I really like the Cobb.

  • The Saddle is worth a try, Cobb has any amazing return policy. I ordered the Max this summer and road it once. It completely destroyed me. I went back to the Adamo. I might try the the vflow for a road set up but the TT position needs to be Adamo for me.

  • Excellent to know about Cobb's return policy. I have a like/hate relationship with the Adamo. Maybe it is time to try another type.

Well, I've only had 2 babies, but have cried those same tears! and still am. I had been riding the plus for over 6 mos. (of course past their return window!) and finally decided to try yet ANOTHER saddle - this time a Terry male specific Zero. Who knows!!! This has got to be the most frustrating part of the whole dealio for me. I'm not convinced I will ever get it right, but maybe I am just a big baby . There are just some places that shouldn't hurt though!

So here's what I have in my garage and am happy to send any of these to anyone that wants to give one a whirl. Maybe we can start a saddle exchange!Adamo Racing, Profile Design tri stryke (w/ cut out), Women's Bontrager (w/ cut out), and the Cobb V-Flow Plus.

  • Robin--here's my 2-cents. Pain is pain. Pain will never go away. You cannot "break in" a saddle that gives you pain. No saddle is 100% perfect, but there's a difference between breaking one in, dealing with some discomfort, and pain. If it really hurts you, it's no good. And as Rich says, no saddle is comfortable after 4 hours or so. image I can't tell you how thrilled I am that I finally found a saddle that works better than I ever expected. My saga was getting nigh upon Shakespearean--and one of his tragedies at that!

I am with you Beth, though my relationship with the Adamo was pure hate!  Trisports.com has a saddle rental, so I tried the Adamo for about 5 minutes and promptly sent it back!!  Saddle was too short, not wide enough in the back for the sits bones, noise piece too wide and last but not least rubbed on both thighs.  Yuck, that was a nightmare saddle for me   I am riding on a Koobie Tri Saddle.  It is decent, but I would like Santa to bring me a Cobb V-Flow Max in White

  • I have the V-Flow Plus and absolutely LOVE this saddle. The Plus is different than the Max. I found the Max to be too wide on the nose. It actually flares out slightly on the nose adding some width. The Plus has a skinnier nose which is something to consider if you haven't tried either saddle but would like to.

Linda, not sure you've seen a Max up close. Funny because I was just looking at both about 2hrs ago at my friend's shop. He carries the entire line. I don't think there's a single difference in the drop off. The difference is in the width only as far as I can tell and I spent some time examining both.

    Thanks, Chris

  • Correction on my part: I have the Max.

A 180 day return policy on a saddle is unheard of. Worth trying if you have saddle woes.

Been riding Profile Design TriStryke for 3 yrs and had "settled" that it was as good as it will get....

Okay with saddle but not the perfect ride I am looking for.  Going to try the cobb saddle.  How can I not with the return policy.

I have the TriStryke and a Fizik if anyone wants to try them.  Also had an old Selle San Marco on road bike that seems to work well on roadie but not on tribike?!?!

Road bike and tri bike saddles seem to be very separate beasts. I also have a Selle San Marco saddle that worked well on my road bike, but made me cry once I converted it to tri mode.

  • Hey Bryan - I would be happy to send you my V Flow Plus if you want to send me your Fizik for a trial run. Even though they have an AWESOME return policy that would save you putting out the $$$ initially. I have been wanting to try the Fizik, but haven't wanted to put out the $$$ just to have another saddle in my collection image. Let me know if you want to do that and we can exchange addresses.

    Robin-
I'm in.  PM me your address and I will have it in the mail quickly.  I am leaving on 21st and will not return until 30th, so no bike time for during that period.  If it is okay with you I will ship it US Postal Ground.  Fizik is white if that is okay.

  • Bryan - PM is not working for me for some reason - my email is robinpcline733@hotmail.com. Maybe we can exchange info that way? Thanks

  • I have both the Plus and the Max. As well as the Adamo. Adamo has been on tri bike. Plus on road bike. When I ordered the Max, I talked to John at length (not often you get to talk to designer about intent). He recommended putting the Plus on the tri bike and the Max on the road bike due to design. He said that is where most folks were finding best comfort. I am following his advice at this time.
  • Just went through more fittings as trying to get the most comfortable saddle for me. I ordered the Cobb V-Flow Max and put it on TT bike myself. I was liking it, but the bike shop made some tweaks and I am very happy.

    I found that I need:
    1. cutout all the way to the end
    2. Long nose as I scoot around quite a bit but tend to be on the nose
    3. Slightly wider nose overall for comfort, and on each side for maximum spreading of load points.

Bike shop has Adamo for me to try if I want, but they don't think I will find the nose long enough. Suspect they are correct.

Also picked up my new road bike- Princess. Pics are coming, but I had them put on an SMP Lady Glider. This is a cutout, long nose saddle as well, but since you sit more upright, there is more padding for the sit bones.

Both of these felt great in the shop. Can't get out on the road for a while. So all I can say is that they are working on the trainer. Tweaks will likely be needed, but I am already more comfortable. And that is measured by the fact that previously, on biking days, I had to go commando due to chafing.

I realize that I'm entering the dangerous, TMI area here, but aren't you always supposed to go commando underneath bike shorts?  Usually some chamois cream will do the trick...

Unless you're riding the bike au naturale

  • Funny Mike. LMAO!
I was referring to the fact that I had to go commando at work!
  • I was thinking the same thing Mike...just didn't want to say anything.

Time to get on the bike. Trainer ride this morning.

  • Michele- I wanted to check in to see how you are liking your SMP Lady Glider? Hobbs (the road bike) needs a new saddle. The Terry Butterfly serves me well most of the time, but I rarely ride him more than 50 miles- and I hate being in the drops on that saddle. I need to find something more comfy for TOC! I heart my Adamo on Fiona (the TT bike), and I actually liked the Adamo when I borrowed Kris's road bike last summer at IMLou too. But that nose is a bit short for a road bike- so I'm considering other options.
  • Nemo- The Lady Glider is on Princess and she has yet to leave the house. And she is much too pretty for the trainer (or maybe I am too lazy to switch bikes- I forget). But I have not had any time in that saddle. This is the first nice weekend and I might get out on her tomorrow for some fun. Will report back if I do it.
  • Nemo- I rode for an hour on Princess. The weather here was perfect. I have not had a road bike fit me like this EVER. I felt like I was flying, pedaling was effortless at times and the hills were easy. I am not sure if it's my fitness or the bike. I am leaning towards the bike as my FTP is same as last year. That said, the saddle was perfect, as in I did not notice it. This to me is the epitome of a good fit. I never once thought about the saddle other than to remind myself that you wanted to know how it felt. I definitely think it was an excellent choice. I was wearing well padded pedal pusher biking pants. This can be worse at times, too much padding can cause problems, but I was fine and think I could wear tri shorts without a problem. Too cold to find out any time soon. I would recommend this saddle as long as you like cut outs - which you must if you ride an adamo.
