Doctor Question: Endometrial Cancer?

Calling all medical folks:

Can anyone refer me to reputable sites where I can research endometrial cancer?  My wife went in for a hysterecomy to remove what the doctor/surgeons thought was a Stage 1 endometrial cancer with fibroid tumors.  Turned out that cancer spread into the intestines, lymph nodes and what I thought the doctor said was the aorta (it could be aorta lymph nodes).  I think I was in shock after they told me the cancer had spread further than they expected.  They have provided a preliminary staging as a Stage III C.

I've gone through the shock, denial, and panic stages and am now moving into seeking to understand as much as possible.  Any sources of information you can refer me to?

Thanks!

  • Rich, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Two sites I'd start with are

    http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/endometrial/Patient

    And

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/endometrial-cancer/DS00306

Let us know if there's anything you need.
  • Dammit!

I'll hold you and your family in my prayers.
  • What Bill said. So sorry to hear this news.
  • sorry about the news.
I'll pray for her speedy recovery
  • So sorry for your news. Will be praying for healing. I'm living proof that you can beat stage III C cancer. Keep us posted about how we can help! That you are asking is great! My husband was a complete advocate for my treatment and took copious notes because multiply the shock by 10 for her. It will all seem sureal for a while since it seems these things only happen to other people. Give her a hug from me...one cancer survivor to another! Livestrong my friend!
  • Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers!

Mike, those sites were very helpful!  I appreciate you quick response!  I have a very basic understanding of what we are dealing with and great questions to ask the onocologist/surgeon.

Bill and Nemo, "Dammit" is right!  We are not going to let this disease get the better of her or own her!   We had a chance to really talk without the continuous stream of family and friends coming in and out of the hospital room.  Just her and I!  It gave her a chance to really open up for the first time and let out all of the pent up emotion.  She didn't let it out before because everytime she started crying the 16" incision hurt like hell!  But during the conversation was the first time I heard from her that she was going to fight it and positive that she could beat it!  I think that is half the battle sometimes.

Sheryl, that is encouraging to hear that another person has beaten Stage III C cancer.  If I can, I might PM you on ocassion to ask a question or two as she goes through treatment to validate that what she is experiencing is normal (if there is such a thing when battling cancer!)

    Blessings on you all!

  • Rich - so sorry to hear the news - another place you might want to go is the LiveStrong Foundation - they might be able to give you some additional info...
  • Rich ~ I'm so sorry to read this. J.T. had mentioned LIVESTRONG and I wanted to follow up a little on that. The foundation provides free "Guidebooks" that are chock full of excellent information. They can ordered here: http://www.store-laf.org/gbj001.html

Again, they're supposed to be free but if they end up not being so, definitely lemme know and I'll make sure you get one.

I have a fairly good relationship w/the organization as I'm a grassroots fundraiser. I know you don't know me from adam, but please feel free to contact me if I may be of further help. If you feel comfortable in doing so, Email me your address to jpsnowjr@hotmail.com and I'll mail you a couple of LIVESTRONG bracelets too.

We'll be thinking good thoughts in the interim.

    Best,

    Jim

  • Rich, Sorry to hear your news. Didn't see this post till now. Good advise on sites etc.. so far. As you may know I'm in this thing too right now, 2 months out of treatments and holding on for killing this thing. Biggest thing I can tell you right now is to be as Positive as can be and let that vibe flow to her. I really thing the power of staying positive and those around you is a huge plus in fighting through it. Also another caution on getting advise from those of us who have been through treatments and how each individual is different to the different types of treatments. What she may be feeling and reacting from treatments may be totally different as to how I felt going through it, but may be perfectly normal for her body to react that way. Again I am living example you can come out of treatmemnts and into the OS an survive this crap.

Stay Positive Brother and thinking of you and her!!
  • Rich,

First, let me tell both you and your wife to stay strong.  So you know, I am an Ob/Gyn.  I am not sure where the good patient resources are found in regards to endometrial cancer, but without question the Gyn-Oncologist treating your wife should have it readily available. Typically they are members of something called the Gynecologic Oncology Group (gog.org)  The MD will have the most up-to date treatment plans, as it continues to evolve in light of on going clinical trials.  I believe that in the case of a Stage IIIC endometrial cancer there can be a combination of both radiation and chemotherapy depending on both the type of cancer as well as the presence of para-aortic nodes.  When I am at the office tomorrow, I will check through my references to see if I can help you out.

  • Another site that's pretty good is MD Anderson's: http://www.mdanderson.org/patient-and-cancer-information/cancer-information/cancer-types/uterine-cancer/index.htm

Will keep your wife, yourself and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
