Weekly Run Thread 11/8/10 (aka Beth Shoots For 30/30 and Stark The "Old Guy" Thread)

Hi All - Left ankle a little "tender" this morning.  Appears to be loosening up the more I walk.  May or may not run today.  Will make the call in a couple of hours.

With that said . . . . Let's get this party started!

  •  John, I think that its called old age!!  It happens to me each morning.  I have to walk for about 5-10 minutes before I have full range of motion.

  • John, I think Dan just called you 'old'..... ouch!
  • Ya, OUCH!    But no worries.  I am a spry 46 year old dude!   Compared to other dads my age, I look pretty damn good.

However, I have to admit . . . .I have to schedule an appt. with an optometrist.  Can't seem to read up close anymore.  That and my receding hair line make it hard to deny I am getting older.  But I WILL NOT go down without a fight!

And notice I changed the thread title.

  • @ John - too funny! I hear you about the eyes thing. My vision started going south around 38 but I kept ignoring it til I couldn't read a menu or the newspaper. Since then I have been needing anual upgrades till my glasses got so thick I started to use coke bottles! Now, 3 years post Lasikz, I am needing 2X readers --- so the slow disintegration continues......

Getting older sucks! But it sure beats the alternative....
  •  Alright, before I get into more trouble here.... John is having pain in his forties that I've had since I was 30, and I'm only 35.  So body wise, John's is much younger!!!!  Don't even let me get started about my knees, I was told by my surgeon that I had 80 year old ones.

  • I stopped being able to see the chalkboard in fifth grade. #contactswork. Giving dating advice last night, my friend Alex informed me that smart, nice boys like to talk to girls with glasses and told me I should wear mine more often.. So, the reverse is probably true. Enjoy the attention of the specs.

And a new defnitely of 30/30 for me!

  • I guess I am the geezer in the room at 52... oh... uuhh where was I.....

Oh, yeah - Dan, when I turned 30 I injured my lower back and was unable to walk for almost 2 weeks, then shortly after recovering I fell on the job (pouring concrete) and bruised 4 ribs and couldn't breath right for a month. Then I got a hernia and needed surgery, then another back injury - this time my neck area and couldn't lift anything above my head and couldn't use a hammer! I was only 30 and I thought my life was over!

Fortunalty I quit the construction trade before it killed me and I dont have any cronic issues anymore. Sorry to hear about the knees - must be an issue with SBR stuff isnt it?

LOL - I jsut couldn't resist the poke - it was such an easy setup...... =:-)
  •  Well Steve, yes and no.  I really blame my knees on being overweight for about 6 years and trying to run.  With that said, I've been a runner for most of my life and started to get into triathlons after my first surgery because I swam a lot and rode a stationary bike a lot.  Figured I could always limp/walk across the line, I've enough running in my life to not really feel bad about that!  Great to hear you are put back together again, enjoy it!

  •  Got about 40' in today, with about an inch of snow on the ground!  I was running in a snowstorm, so much for the weather forecaster!

  •  It was beautiful today in Columbus, OH, 50F, no wind, lunch time 6mi trail run in 47min, Alum Creek Trail.

PM, 4500m SCM workout, swimming is coming up, feeling better in the water after a 2 month brake.

  • 45 minutes of core with the personal trainer this morning.  Then ran an easy 2 miles on the dreadmill.

Tomorrow is Q1 and another 40 minute tempo run and it will be on 3 days rest since last Q workout vs. 2 days last time.  Am going to add :30 to the pace in the book and see how I feel after :20.  If I am OK then I will pick it up and see what happens.  More than anything, I need to run it non-stop for the full :40 and at as close to pace as possible.  Need the mental mojo.

Still noddling doing it on a paved trail about 20 minutes away, dreadmill or the track.  I live in a hilly area and these are the only really "flat" places I can run and hold a steady pace.    Thoughts?

    John

  • I'd do the trail.

Running in a snowstorm? Wild. Time to get out the Team Tundra Force hats!

Day 23/23 and the first real Phase II workout for me. MS: 5x1000 (I) and 6x400 (R). That was a serious, grown-up running workout. I was also ever so slightly overcooking my paces on everything, in an oddly consistent way, so I think I might bump my vdot up a point or two and see what happens. All that RPE base in Phase I obviously did something good!

Will I be crying tomorrow? Stay tuned.

  • @John:RE: the eyes: just you wait young man; my big most excellent discovery of the year has been bifocal riding glasses!
  • @ John, x2 on the trail - good place for brain-mojo, and stay away from the deadmill as long as weather permits!

@ Beth - awesome streakin' and that PII sounds like fun!

@ Bill - are those bifocal sunglasses for biking? I might need to get some myself. Gettin' hard to read my bike CPU

I think I like to lurk here 'cause I really miss my running. Tonight I get to run 25' as a brick but it is only Z1......

This weekend was in NYC and walked a lot but never saw the marathon - we did bike the Park on Saturday and got a glimps of the finish. I was there with my wife racking up SAU's while visiting her son.

    Run Stong
  • From one 46 year old to another... I am starting the reading glasses thing too.  Annoying..  At least I still have my hair.

  • @Steven,

Yup, for riding. I was struggling to read my CPU and brevet cue sheets when I ran across the idea of bifocal riding glasses. They're just safety glasses, cheap. I got a clear pair for night/cloudy riding, regular dark lenses for sunny days. No problem with the transition line either.
  • @ Bill, I got to get me some of them by spring! Where would I look, Home Depot or Lowes?
  •  @Jon: was that some sort of joke, the hair comment???? I have none!!!!!!!!!!!  And I'm young (age wise anyway!)  2 strikes against me, bad joints and no hair, I can't wait for the glasses, at least I'll be able to see again.

  • @Steven,

Check out safteyglassesusa.com; that's where I got mine.
  •  @Beth, that is an awesome workout packed with a lot of work. 5000m, about 3+mi of I-pace and 1.5mi of R-pace, uhh... that is a lot. Awesome job on over pacing that. You got to be ready to bump your Vdot number big time. It is so awesome to run that fast stuff.

Today, Columbus, OH for me again, trail, pretty, I was hurting. 7mi in 51min with 17.5min total of I-pace work, split into 5 sets of

2min(1min)1min(30sec)30sec(30sec) all I-pace, target 6:04, all went down between 5:57 and 6:07, it was tough to gauge effort on trail, also trees jack with Garmin, I could tell I was fading in the end.

    PM, 60min stationary bike, 3x5min@FTP.

Tomorrow easy 5mi at lunch, evening 4500m mixed stroke swim, lots of fly sets. Looking forward to that.

  • I did my first track workout in 2+ years last night.

    6x800m. OUCH.
I got a range of paces, from 6:45-7:30/mile, over all 6. That was tough to concentrate, good thing I could follow the little white lines!

Those with WU and CD, got me about 4.25 miles overall.

This will be my Tuesday ritual during the OS, I think. PAIN!
  • Good work everyone!

    I only have a minute to post . . .

Today was Q1 tempo run.  48 degrees, wet (rained last night) and windy this morning and based on the last tempo run in the cold . . . .

Hit the gym and nailed 42 minutes on the dreadmill at an overall average of 8:25, 5 seconds slower than book pace.  Started out Z2 and then just kept goosing the speed a little at a time finishing the last 10 minutes at 8:05 pace.  HUGE mental mojo!  Did the happy dance after.

On a separate note, I was invited to ride with Chris (MACCA) McCormack tomorrow.  There will be a small group of about 10 people, I guess.  Tom Glynn will be with me.  Course is relatively flat in the San Francisco south bay.  Should be fun.  I think we will be having lunch with him after.  Will know more tomorrow.

    John

  •  @John: Nice!  Pictures or it didn't happen...

  • Can you believe it!?  Woke up this morning with a sore throat, achy and an upset stomach!

No Macca ride for me today.

  • Damn! You should still show, just for Macca. Tell him you know the guy who put the Cigar Man picture on his Facebook page. If I could only get an autographed copy of it.

    Hope you feel better.

  • Starkman...NOOOOO! Hope you're feeling better, but Boo! on missing the Macca ride. You know, when he first showed up to Kona he was a really good looking young man with nice skin. Now is face is like a worn baseball glove. Same with Michelie Jones' skin. What is up with the Aussies and lack of sunscreen? Is there no spf in Australia greater than 6? I digress...

Ran 45 minutes on trails on Monday, 40 minute trail run yesterday. Still no Garmin, just drills/strides and running harder up the hills.

So I went to see a deep tissue massage doode this week thinking I'd get that big knot in my calf and hip rubbed out. Instead, he does this full on assessment and determines that the reason I have that big knot in said calf and hip is because my psoas, hip adductors, and hamstrings are weak and tight. I was assigned strengthening exercises for those muscles and stretches. I had a feeling there was some functional/biomechanical problem but just couldn't put my finger on it. What he said certainly sounded plausible so I'm gonna give this a try for 5 weeks and see if there's improvement. More to come...
  • Foster's How to Speak Australian:

    Sweat = Sunscreen.

  •  NOOOOOOOOOO!   So sorry bro.  I was pumped for you.  You could've at least driven the route and provided sandwiches!  Sorry man, I hope you feel better.

    Dan

  • No, Stark! That's no fun!

25/25 in. Um. I want my foam roller.

  • @John, sorry to hear that. What a bummer. I hope you get better quick. Macca can come back when you are ready.

I have a good one today for you. I did Q1 earlier this week, all great, not easy but ok. Felt beat up yesterday and took a day off. Today, in Islip, NY, flat, windy, 54F, plan was Q2 3x2mi(2min)T-pace, guess what, I imploded spectacularly mentally and physically in mi 2 of the first interval. Ok, I am mad now, I tuned it down, thought, I will salvage this on a 4mi mark, ok, start 2nd time, holding pace, holding and than bam, nope, my mind had enough and that was it, I was angry, not terribly exhausted, but just simply my mind did not want to take discomfort. Jogged and finished 8mi in 60min,called it a day.

Here is the deal. I was running into the wind and wanted to stick with some bogus number of 6:45/mi that I thought was good for the wind, not listening to my breathing, not paying attention to my effort, just plain overpace again. Anyway, I will have to let it go and get ready for Q3 Sunday, I-pace and R-pace mix to a total of 5000m.

These T-pace runs will kill me. I take track any day over T-pace.
