Coming back to Tri and Crash #2... duh!

Hi Team,

Now that Nationals for Ultimate Frisbee (yes, such a thing does exist) is behind me I am swinging my attention back to Tri related stuff.  I am curious to see how will a 2-3 month focus on sprint, agility and leg speed will impact my vdot.  I guess my first answer will come in 2 weeks when I give the Philly Half marathon a go.  This will be interesting since I have only ran more than 3 miles maybe 3 times since Eagleman in June. We will see what happens.  I am just excited to be a little more active around the EN community once again.  It has been interesting seeing how my body is adjusting to the Nov OS workouts.  I suspect it will take some time, all I know is I can run the first half of all the mile repeats great (feel like eI am holding back like a crazy person), but then I would just blowup out of now where.  I guess that is the difference between speed and endurance?

So, I guess I should address the title of this post, well the crash was super duper stupid; I decided to take my Saturday OS bike workout outside yesterday; and after I made a left turn and a FTP interval I decided to check out my stats for the last set.  You know the normal geek out thing; the only different was someone left a small piece of 2x4 on the side of the road, maybe about 1.5 feet in length.  What are the chances for me to hit some like that when I am not looking at the road? Well, I guess the chance is not as bad as I thought since I ran right over it while I was fiddling with the bike computer.  I tried of recover and just could not.  I wasn't going very fast (unlike the crash in March).  Very mild road rash on the hip and arm and a cracked helmet.  After doing some reading today it seems that I might have had a mild concussion since I still have a mild headache today and I couldn't remember which part of the ride I was on for a few minutes.  Other than that everything is fine, even my bike; I am glad I picked up a aluminum Cross bike at the end of the summer.  Don't know what I would do if I have to replace another Carbon tri bike.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this embarrassing story because it was really really stupid of me and I could have totally prevented from happening.  But because I was such a number geek I didn't pay enough (or any) attention to the road and the result could have been much much worse.  Please be safe out there and don't do what I did; knowing your Power # for the last 10min isn't as important as seeing what is in front of you.

Glad to be back in action even with the crash.

Wei

PS in case you were worried, even though I was confused at where I was in the ride I thought about how I think I could keep on riding.  But after seeing the cracks on the helmet I decided to call my wife to pick me up just in case I go down again.  Laura wanted me to go to the hospital to get checked out but been a stupid mucho guy I did not give in.  My argument this morning was "See I woke up just fine, so there was no need for the hospital!" Real mature, right? oh yeah don't tell her I still have a mild headache and are a little sensitive to bright lights...

  • Wei (ALL other EN GUYS)

A Loss of Consciousness/ confusion/ disorientation requires EVALUATION!!!!!!! NO JOKE

Wei, yes, you woke up fine, but there is something called an epidural hematoma- pt will have LOC and wake up, only to go unconsious again. ( Think Natasha richardson, wife of Liam nelson, who died after ski accident  from  complications of Epidural hematoma) http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29733775

Ongoing symptoms such as headache and sensitivity to light should be evaluated.

"Laura wanted me to go to the hospital to get checked out but been a stupid mucho guy I did not give in"-Not sure I get this? Why?

WElcome back, glad you do not have to get  another carbon bike,  but you really should be evaluated

  • Wei, welcome back! I'd consider the eval too....bring your laptop and you can play on wifi in the forums until you are seen!!!! Lesson to all, geek out about the data when you are done!!!
  • When debating if you should get checked out after a seemingly minor head injury...two words...Natasha Richardson

  • Doode. What peeps said about Natasha Richardson. And I managed to hallucinate a pink bunny and still think I was supposed to ride. BE CAREFUL!!!! Glad you are okay. No more crashing. =-)
  • Thanks for the good kick in the butt guys! I know I really should have get it checked out, but for some reason I always fight going to the doctor.
I do feel better today, less sensitive to lights. If I am not even better tomorrow, I will definitely get it checked out.
Thanks again, and yes, I am stupid for geeking out with the data on my ride and I am stupid for not getting checked out. This will not happen again!
    Be safe everyone.
  • Wei- welcome back! Glad your taking the teams advice. And really glad you don't have to replace another bike! One more helmet is enough!!!
  • Go get that check up from the neck up, Wei! Don't want to hear that you woke up with a brain injury and drooling on yourself.image
