I could be a world class junior female!

If I lost about 30 pounds...   Just came across these testing standards USAT uses for junior talent identification.  Found them fascinating

file is here

World class Junior Female bike standard is 230W FTP, 4.18 w/kg

World class Junior Male bike standard is 310W FTP, 4.76 w/kg

Apparently, on the bike, I'm somewhere in the range of "Regional level Junior Male"

Nowhere to go but up!

(one caveat, they calculate power at threshold totally differently than we do, so this really isn't apples to apples at all, but I thought it was pretty interesting, nonetheless)

  • I think the run test is even more humbling than the bike...

World class Junior Males ride for 30' at 260W, have to transition in less than 15", and then run 2 miles in under 9:26. Yes that means two 5:13 miles after riding 30' at about 84%.

Of course these are world class athletes and there are therefore only a handfull of them, but still very humbling.
  • true. that's damn quick!

Scary that even a regional level Junior Male can do 30' at 230 watts (95% of FTP), and then run 2 miles in 11:33 (5:46 / mi). Round these parts, that's called a top 10 finish at a local sprint, among grown men...
  • Actually, I was on the phone while doing that and screwed up the math... 2 miles in 9:26 is 4:43 pace!
  • I've been at USAT nationals the last couple years. Believe me, the winners at those races are very high caliber. And even then, a few of the very very best don't attend.
  • My boys do that all the time! If they were the same AG, but female, Olympic trials no sweat! image
