FTP Goals
Hello Everyone,
New member here...
I recently completed my bike test and ended up with an FTP of 176. Like most, i want to set a goal for 2011, but am unclear what is realistic. I'm used to setting goals using pace rather than power and do fairly well in HIM - pacing 20-21mph. I was thinking about using a pace goal and translating that into FTP, but that probably doesnt make sense!!
I'm somewhat lost on where to start.

It really depends upon where you are coming fitness wise on how much improvement you will see. I believe the average is around 15% increase in the 20 week OS. I came off the couch last year in July and did some mountain biking before the november OS and got 25% increase on the bike. Vdot I went from a 29 to a 37. All this was over 26 weeks of OS as I had some extra time.
In addition I only started the bike in November and running with the January OS as I tried to lose some weight. So I had the opportunity to focus on biking with extra recovery days. That's my n-1 sample. I have set a pretty aggressive target again this year but having taken 9 weeks off my FTP dropped 36 points and vdot 5 points from last year max.
