Early Season Half Suggestions

Hey guys- I was planning on doing TTT for my early big race this season, but recently decided against it.  SO, I am looking for an early season half iron distance to do, figure May or June, that is in the midwest.  I dont need a big 70.3 brand race, just the distance.  Anyone have any recommendations of a race they have done/heard about that would be a fun race to do?  Thanks!

  • I'm going to be doing High Cliff HIM in June. There should be some other folks doing it also. I know there were last year. Supposed to be a good race.

  • What about Rev3 Knoxville in May?
  • both great suggestions!
  • Any recommendations in the Southwest (Dallas) for May - July?
  • High Cliff is ok... swim is very short, bike is boring and he aid stations were non-existant, run is about 90% trail runing, waves are by when you register not AGs...but it is about 1/3 the price of a 70.3. Now that I know what to exact I may be back this year again with proper expectations.

If you want a good pre-IMWI half, I highly recomend Kansas 70.3. The swim is accurate, the bike course is VERY similar to IMWI, and the run has a ton of specators with a decent hill you have to run twice. If it wasn't a 9 hour drive for me, I would easily pay 3x as much to do Kansas over High Cliff.

Both races are the within a week of each other and in my opinion prefect timing for IMWI.

@Chris, the only half I know of in NTX in that timeframe is TX man, by Dallas Athletes. I think it's usually in late July. It's freakin HOT and HUMID though, lots of hills too. Ran out of Lewisville area.

I live near White Rock Lake, btw. Where you at?

Same here, especially after reading your post.
  • I would also endorse the quality of the KS 70.3. Another thing to say about the run course is that it's pretty family/spectator friendly. It's two loops in a park area that make it easy for a fan to see you at more than one point in the loop, meaning they can see you 4 times easily, and more if they want.

And, for those who care about such things, it has had a pretty good pro line-up, e.g., Chrissie Wellington has run it the last couple years and stayed to hand out medals. Moreover, again because of the way the run is laid out with both an out-and-back and the double loop, you have a good chance to see the leaders running during the race. I did it in 2009, finishing in a bit over 5 hours, and got to see both men's and women's leaders on the run.

@Matt - sent you a note about this via Facebook

  • KS 70.3 is on my possible list, as I'm looking for a driveable June 70.3.
  •  Hi Scott, I am up in Frisco.  I did the TXMan Olympic last year and agree it's hot. They moved it up to May in 2011.  Looks like they may drop the HIM distance though.  It is not showing up on their website.

  • Does anyone know how fast Kansas typically fills up? Just trying to figure out how much time I have to decide...
  • I believe Kansas has yet to actually sell out much in advance (if at all). however it seems that more and more people are doing it each year. I bet you have a while, but by spring you probably should register.

if you are set on doing it, you can usually save a little by registering before 12/31.
  •  I'm just curious, why did you decide against TTT?  You can do just the half (which is called Little Smokies Half) instead of all the races.  I am considering it since I just found out that the Macon, GA half I was going to do has been moved to October.

The last several years there has been a half in Taylorsville, KY in mid May.  It's not a big name race but I've heard it's fun.  I have the same schedule conflict every year so I've never done it.

  • Kansas 70.3 will probably sell out just not as quickly as others. I heard the purse for the pros is going to be substantially higher for 2011 so it should have a nice pro turnout.
  • I will be doing Kansas and then IMWI. I too was looking for an early season half that was close to Colorado. The only one was KS. I think there are others from Team EN doing this double.
  • @Gary good point, Kansas will have $50k and is P-750, therefore it will likely draw more pros than Munice, Steelhead and Racine for that reason.
  • I think ill go with Kansas...Ive done Racine and Muncie so many times that I need a change of scenery! Thanks for all then input!
  • KS 70.3. great race June 12. The run is set up great for fam and friends to watch and cheer.
  • OK got a question coaches. With IMWI being Big A race with KS 70.3 being early A race on June 12th. We have the local Pigman Sprint on June 5th. Is this a wise race. I really like to do it because it's our local club race and I go head to head with a lot of guys I train with.... Thoughts? I need to sign up on Dec 25th... fills up fast.
  • @Jeremy... post that on the "Big Picture" thread...much more likely to get a coach response!

(Seems to me that you could recover from Pigman in time, especially if it's done mainly on a social level, i.e., not tapered (except that you're in the midst of the HIM taper). It's an opportunity cost calculation. You'd probably be doing like a 2-2.5 hour bike ride that weekend and doing a rest day Sat, Sun, or Mon. (Can't remember from last year). The last week is light, so you could probably work in a day's rest that's not written in)
