I'm all for taking an EN contingent to not-WTC races! Unfortunately my 2011 is already set (Columbia in May, Eagleman in June, and IMWI in Sept).
For 2012 I'd be totally down with the Quassy Half and, if I get permission from the SO, the Cedar Point Full. Even if I don't race Cedar Point, if there's a group going in 2012, I'd make the trek to volunteer and sherpa and help with the presence factor.
2011 will be my first time at the HIM distance. I thought I would do Patriot Half over Quassy as my first HIM because I heard Quassy was a very tough course, and I want my first long-course race to be a positive experience. (In other words, if I end up in the med tent it will confirm everything my wife thinks about this sport, and will make doing a full iron in 2012 a much tougher sell.) But if I could be confident that I could execute Quassy, and I could meet up with a bunch of EN members in the process, then I'd be happy to do it instead.
At the risk of muddying the water with regarding to HIM distance next year in New England and perhaps this belongs in the other thread re:EN presence at races but... I originally had same thinking as Kevin with regard to doing Patriot over Quassy. (and after 2 trips to medical tent in 2 IM distance races I get one more strike from the family before my racing long course will be over) Not to mention I have a free hotel stay at Patriot due to having to cancel last minute and having pre-paid for my hotel. Still have concerns about doing Quassy fresh on the heels of epic riding at TOC. Perhaps there is enough interest to have a presence at both Quassy and Patriot in 2011?
My notes below hit on a couple related topics: EN at the races, race captains, etc:
EN will still have a large, "official" presence at WTC races. PandorR will still be at IMSG, TX, CDA, USA, Lou, WI, FL, and AZ to lead the weekend. There are still at TON of you doing these races, it's excellent visibility for EN.
That said, your opinions, as well as our own, and the recent actions of WTC has had RnP saying "Fook WTC, we don't want anything to do with them, business-wise. We work for our athletes, period. If they all decide to race other stuff, we follow them"
We plan to scale RnP, so to speak, by creating a Race Director position to coordinate and manage Race Captains for as many races as we can.
The net is that I see a bigass plastic box of EN stuff (flag, shirts, stickers, etc) that is just mailed around the country to races all over. The busier we can keep that box the more we all win.
P approached the Rev 3 guy and basically said that we have a lot of influence over the race decisions of our athletes. At the same time we are hearing a lot of grumbling on the squad about WTC. Maybe there is an opportunity for you to offer something special to our folks and for us to get behind your races, as a Team, for those of TeamEN for whom it makes sense.
Much of this is based on the conversations we see you have about wanting to pick a race or two and see/race with each other. That's awesome and the anti-WTC vibe in here opens that up to non-WTC races...which is again awesome for us and for you.
I haven't raced a tri since IMCDA'08 . I need to do "something" before IMWI but need to fit it around my camp, race, and travel schedule next year. It would definitely be fun to do a Rev3 event with many EN members. Y'all pick and I'll see if I can make it.
@Mike, I said the same thing about PANDORA....funny (or maybe not). I am sensing that we have the following..in order of interest...
* Rev3 Quassy Half on June 5th. This is 1 week before Placid Rally. P will likely do both. * Rev3 SC Half on Oct 8/9. Probably same weekend as Kona, great end of season event. * Cedarpoint Full on 9/11. This is same weekend as Wisconsin, but a few folks interested.
I will go back to charlie with some more info on how we can make this a cool experience for us all!
Thank you Patrick and Rich for this discussion. I know that you are looking at 2011 non WTC race. Can I encourage you to not only look at a 2011 non WTC race, but also look at and identify a 2012 event? I'm sure you are seeing the trend that several people all have their races identified for 2011 which is the nature of signing up for IM distances a year in advance. Just a simple thought!
@John: Looks like a Rev3 HIM in Portland OR on July 10th 2011. Link below has date etc, but no registration details. Nothing on rev3 site yet that I could see.
Rev3 Codes for any Rev3 event in 2011. These codes should only be distributed within EN. Good for $15, $25, and $35 off the respective distances. Registration must be completed on Active.com and the code entered during the checkout process.
I'm considering the Rev 3 South Carolina race. Nice alternative to the Augusta 70.3.
New on my radar tho. Holding out hope on the Hawaii Lottery or Silverman having a Full for the non-ITU crowd (not likely). My other backup was Beach 2 Battleship.
But, I might be ok with subbing the Rev 3 half for the B2B. And, may do another ultra dist charity gig in the Fall, too.
my point being....Yes, I'd be interested in this Rev 3 support.
Chris- FYI, pretty sure I saw a post over the weekend that Silverman will not be doing a Half or Full next year :-( They say they will be concentrating on the ITU full distance race.
So are we in for Quassy Half in 2011? Because I'm gonna need lots of EN help with execution if I'm going to make that my first HIM. Maybe a race rehearsal on the course?
Edited to add: Screw it, enough waffling, I just registered for Quassy Half 2011. Decided I could use the extra motivation to get my watts up and my kilograms down. I hope to meet many of you there!
@Neil - Thanks. I am seriously noodling Portland and representing EN there in July. Already planted the seed with the wife. It is an 11 hour drive there and if I can get someone else locally to go and help drive, I may just pull the trigger. Nice alternative to Vineman 70.3 that same weekend. But it is 9 more hours of driving . . . . each way.

Hey Folks,

Rich, you know I'm always up for shipping boxes for you in exchange for kit!

Being on the west coast . . . . .
I just saw this retweet today:
REV3TRI
Rev3triannouncement. Lets just say that Rev3 is headed west
Any idea what this is about? I would be happy to support Rev3 and a non-IM event.

Nate, as a first time IM'er, it would be very valuable for you to train on the LP course during the rally. That should be your priority.

Nice work, P!
i doubt it will be super popular with the EN collective, especially my midwest crew, but I am in for Rev3 Cedar Point Half.
Though it's the same wknd as IMWI, I did it last year, loved it, and will be back this year for an A race.

Yep, just confirmed by email. bummer. maybe 2012.
Plenty of other good races out there.
