heart rate monitor not working on cycle ops - [position of strap??

so I am about to enter out season and have my new cycle ops power tap thingy on my bike (okay my husband is tech guy) - anyway, I put the HRM strap on and - nothing the computer does not pick up my HR - i put it just below my bra strap and nothing, i put it under my bra strap and nothing.

my husband uses it, and it picks up his HR immediately (we are sharing a wheel and computer at the moment until we can afford a second unit for me)

what gives - are my boobs in the way?? I am wetting the contacts, etc

suggestions please

thanks

Jane

  • Jane- I don't wear a HRM any more. Don't see the point. But, since you asked- I had problems with the first generation of straps that were supposed to be unisex but certainly fit men better. I had the strap at the smallest size and still had to wear it under my bra in order to get a read. My husband can't get it to read if he wears it as recommended. He has to wear it so that the logo is under the armpit, i.e one contact on the chest and the other on the back. Hope you can get it to work.
  •  Thanks Michele - I was mostly interested to see my baseline, but having had a HRM for marathoning in the mid-late 90s, and then not using it cause I went to pace training, I get it.

I had no idea about the different sizes (and I am a bigger gal - I forgot to mention - 139lbs, double D bra size) - but I don' think that should matter.

Anyway, thanks for the response - I am very excited to be part of the group and look forward to being part of the community (and hopefully shattering my 70.3 time next year!)

  • Jane- the HRM can be a useful tool on race day even if you are a power user. It can help you identify an issue or troubleshoot a problem that might not be evident through just the watts numbers. You'll find several threads on this topic in the Power section of the forums.

Are you and your hubby using the same HRM strap as well? If not, the LYC (little yellow computer) would have to learn your HRM strap code before it could pick it up. It can only learn one code though- so you'd need to use the same HRM strap that your hubby uses
  • Nemo, we are using the same strap - we are getting a power tap for my bike when the budget allows - in January I think - so I can wait.

BTW, is there a forum for newbie questions? I've run 25+ marathons, but this LD tri stuff is all new to me and I made some basic training and execution mistakes on my first 70.3 and would love to get some feedback from members like you.

    Cheers

  • Jane- Just go into the General Discussion section OR Power and Pace OR Race Execution (sounds like this is where you want to be). There's not a specific noobie section, but you can post under any of the forum names. Goodluck.
