IMCDA and IMCanada?

After completing my first Ironman last weekend (IMFL), I have been bitten by the Ironman bug and itching to do more races.  I am already registered for IMCDA next year and was considering doing IMCanada as well.  IMCanada is sold out to general entry so this would obviously mean buying an Ironman Foundation spot.  Since I live in Seattle, WA, these two races are both relatively close to me (about a 5-6 hour drive).

I would love to do both of these races, but am a little nervous about doing two Ironman races only 9 weeks apart.  Would it be better to combine IMCDA with a late season race such as IMAZ?  I am new to the Ironman world so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Scott - I did IMCDA earlier this year and have IMAZ on tap next week. It's made for a loooong season. I think an IMCDA/Canada doubleheader is certainly doable. If you go the IMAZ route like I did, be sure to take some time off after IMCDA. I did but it still was hard to wrap my head around another 12 week build.
  • Scott,
For us mere mortals, 2 IM's in a year is alot, mentally as much as physically. Its easy to catch the bug like you have, but you WILL second guess yourself in July....
  • I think the best advice is simply to avoid burnout and using up all of your SAUs (assuming this applies to you). If doing two IMs in rapid succession, or even more spread out doesn't put these two issues in jeopordy, then you're alright. Otherwise...you have time to enjoy your career!

    Not to mention FINANCIALLY!

  • Scott, I'm the lone vote for "do both - mo' Ironman is mo' better."

However, be prepared to significantly adjust your expectations for IM #2.
  • Thank you all for your comments. It turns out that my brother and sister-in-law are pregnant and due in early July, so I think ending my season with IMCDA will be best (besides maybe a couple of shorter races). Maybe I'll reconsider the doubleheader idea for 2012.
