Recovery of MS

 Hey folks,

I'm in Week 5 of the OS and am loving it.  I noticed one thing and wanted to get everybody's thoughts.  I am able to complete the main sets but it takes soo much out of me that my recovery (Z1) is a lot slower than it should be.  If anything, I need to catch my breath for a few seconds before attempting to recover at Z1 before starting the next interval at Z4.

Is it OK that my recovery part of my main set is slower than what my expected Z1 is supposed to be so I can complete the Z4 portions of the main set?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,

Marc

  •  The short answer is do what ya gotta do to make sure you're able to hit/start the next set. The longer answer, inside the FTP focus weeks (1-8) just make sure you can hit the next set.

When you enter the Vo2max weeks (9-14 I think) the recovery portion of the intervals becomes more important. The % of FTP / HR zone is designed to keep you working during the recovery so you're able to force adaptations to your Vo2max when you hit the "on" portion. If you've recovered too much, you'll reduce the amount of time at Vo2max during the 'on' or in the case of "30/30" you'll never make it do Vo2max. The shorter the vo2max interval the more important the recovery. The 2.5 / 2.5 vo2max sets, still important, but less important than the 30/30 sets.
