What to wear during my half

Anyone have any ideas about what to wear during a half with expected temperatures to be in the 40s?  I really have no idea.  Shorts/tights?  Hat?  Gloves?  Under Armour or no?  Thanks

  • You'll warm up quickly. I would wear shorts, short sleeve shirt and a long sleeve shirt over it. You can take that off if you need to and tie it around your waist. I'd also wear lightweight gloves and no hat.

You may even want to skip the long sleeve.

If it were me, I'd wear shorts, an under armor sleveless top, and a long sleeve over that. I'd wear thin gloves, and a hat. If you wear a fuel belt, you can tuck any thing you want to shed under it to keep, like gloves if you get warm
  • 48 degrees at my last HIM and I got away with shorts, tri top, full zip cycling jersey, a headband (I like having my ears covered when cold and wet) and socks (don't normally wear those).  Ditched the jersey at T2.  I donned a UA coldgear top in T1 at another cold one (nice and warm and aero).  Make sure you practice putting the stuff on when you're wet.

  • Thanks guys. Dave that is a great link.
Think I am definitely going with shorts, especially since I love to look at my legs. Definitely will have some gloves that I can just toss if needed. Shirt still debating. I have some thin long sleeve compression tops I like to wear that I may go with. Still debating.
    Thanks again all.
  • I've seen those legs! Not sure I'd get that excited about them...image

At least my legs are moving!

  • I wish I was one of those people that is always warm. For my 1/2, 2 weeks ago, 38 degrees and very windy along Maine coast.

I wore: tights, under armour LS top, form fitting run jacket with wind block front, gloves, light weight winter hat.

I PR'd the race and the only thing I took off was my gloves at Mile 2 or 3. On a hill before the mid point, I took the hat off briefly when running uphill. Soon as I hit the downhill to the coast, hat went back on.
  • For a temp in the mid 40s, you'll be warm enough wearing almost whatever you want after you get going.

My advice concerns the fact that you may have to stand around for a long time before the race. You don't want to get cold THEN. Again, I'm sure you'll be fine by a couple miles into the race...but if you're worried about cold, find yourself an outfit that costs you $20 or something (old sweatshirt, cheap fleece hat, gloves...whatever) and just deal with the fact that you're going to take it off and leave it, either right before the race or very early on. It's just part of the price of racing...like parking. :-)
  • general rule of thumb, add 20 degrees and dress for that.  Once you're about a half to a mile in you'll be warmed up.  So, what are you comfortable wearing when it's 60 degrees?

My guess is shorts and a long sleeve technical tee would be okay (nothing thermal/cold gear-ish).  Perhaps ear warmers and gloves.  That said, throw away clothes for waiting to start is always smart... gloves, extra shirt, etc...

    good luck!

  • I sometimes also base what I wear on the pre and post race situation.

For eample there is a half I run in March each year that can be in the lowever 30s or colder, but pre and post race we can hang out in a gym so I can dress light and only head outside 15' before the race and straight instead after. If I get cold while running it isn't to bad and I litterally go straight instead after.

However I also do a spring half where the temp is usually 50-60 and I actuall dress the same, plus an extra layer that I drop before the start of the race. As I am outside for at least an hour prior to the race and the same after, I just can't take the chance at getting cold here and I will neer warmup again.

I find gloves, a hat, and arm warmers to be my go to items. As I never get too hot with them and can actually run in just a singlet and them without getting too cold.
  • Shorts, with gloves. Base layer with long sleeves, long sleeve top with front 1/4 zip. Skull cap to start.
  • Thanks again all. Went out for a run this morning to test things out. Definitely going shorts, light gloves and light hat. Still debating the under armour cold gear vs just plain old technical compression shirt. I definitely get the fact that I will warm up quick but that 15-30 minutes of waiting around is gonna be cold! Should be fun.
  • FYI- at the half I did, they were quite explicit about not "tossing clothes" when you get hot unless you are giving them to someone specific. They said that the community did not want to find stuff on their lawns. Very valid, I thought.
  • Last year I ran the Goofy Race --- talk about cold. One thing I learned from it is that a large garbage bag has excellent insulating properties. I was amazed at how much a difference it made.

Unless you have an extra LS race shirt that you no longer want, I would recommend the "Hefty" option for the 15-20 minutes you will be outside. An added bonus is it repels water if there is any snow/sleet.
