Bike Test...did I make any progress?

So, I had my bike test yesterday.  HR Only, no power, so it was a 40' test.  Below are the results from the first test and second.  Hope the formatting comes out okay.  I thought I had gotten a lot "faster" after the ride, but comparing, it doesn't seem that way.  Unless I'm mis-interpreting things:

Category - 11/1 , 11/23

Ave HR - 154 , 154

Max HR - 177 , 171

Ave Speed - 22.9 , 23.1

Ave Cad - 95.2 , 90.2

Distance - 15.25 , 15.41

I am not disappointed at all.  Just a little surprised that the distance and speed weren't a little more improved.  One thing I do notice is the drastic difference in cadence.  I might have been able to go longer, but I don't think I could have gone faster.

Any insight from the team is appreciated.

  • Well first thing I notice is that you tested only 3-4 weeks apart.

Second, your HR is down a fair amount. Were you rested for this test? There are many reasons for your HR being lower...I can't say why based on this info...but don't forget, not working hard enough is one of the many reasons. How did the test feel?

Other than that... .2mph is not a bad improvement over 4 weeks. If you extrapolate that is almost 1mph over the 20 weeks and puts you near 24mph. At those speeds getting really dramatic improvements gets a bit tougher.
  • the way I see it:
    you rode faster (progress)
    you rode further (progress)
you went from riding @ 87% of max hr to riding @ 90% of max hr (progress)
I'd say that's some good progress for 3-4 weeks of training!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!

btw, from what I understand, your max hr will drop as you become more fit but you may not see any big fluctuations in your avg hr which is perfectly displayed in the #'s you provided.

  • have to correct myself a bit.....your max hr # really should be a stand-alone test and not taken into consideration during your TT...unless you redlined it for a few minutes during both of your TT's. Either way, you went faster and futher during a very short period of time, all of which is pointing in the right direction.

It felt hard as $h!+.  But like I said, I could have gone a bit longer, but could NOT have gone any faster.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on this.

  • What Eric said, bet you'll see bigger gains with another 4 weeks under your belt!
