Stationary Bike hack?

For a few weeks of the OS including a test week, I won't have access to my bike/trainer.   Is it to be assumed I can do the same workouts and testing (HR) on a stationary spinning bike at a gym?  Should I alter resistance going between Z4 intervals, rest intervals, etc?  Or just keep the same resistance and alter my cadence?  Anyone else have to resort to this due to travel?

Thanks for any tips!

  •  @Mac, I am a veteran stationary bike user, 3 years now and counting. It is due to what I do for living, 7 days on at work, no bike/trainer, 7 days off at home, my bike/trainer.

    1. I would not test on the stationary bike, no point as that is not your primary cycling device that you race with and want to track the     progress. Test before you leave on your own bike.

    2. I use HR monitor+cadence on the stationary bike vs. powermeter on my bike. I use resistance in correlation with RPE/cadence

to complete workouts while away. I stick with my known cadence in Z4 and set resistance to match RPE for say Z4. That is how I go about executing FTP workouts.

I than use HR as a supporting metric to confirm I am somewhere near where I need to be.

I record the type bike, make and model, resistance level used and cadence, some even have power. I than use that data later if I run into the same make and model to start the workout, but adjust further if required as not all of them are calibrated the same.

    Hope this helps.

  •  Great info!  It's good to know I can keep up my workouts.  Most gym bikes I'll have access to have resistance knobs so it won't be possible to accurately keep track of resistance.  And I'll definitely rearrange the workouts so I test at home.

    Thx!

  • Not sure it is applies directly but i hardly ever change gears on the bike when it's on the trainer. Only thing that changes is cadence. Only time the gearing changes is for 30/30 s
