Thoughts about Mavic Open Pro w WheelCover?

I’m thinking about purchasing a Mavic Open Pro with a PowerTap. Does this wheel work well with a disc cover? Or should I consider a deeper wheel that will have some extra room between the cover and the braking surface?

Thanks for the help!

  •  I used it for the first time this year with the wheel cover.  It took some tinkering but the cover fit well and worked great.  With that and art work by my kids it was pretty sweet.  Now, my bike time for my race was good, but I'll attribute that to my EN plans!!!  I found this to be the cheapest way towards "free" speed.

  •  it will work but if you go slightly deeper, velocity of similar, it will be easier to deal with the cover

  • The major advantage of a deeper wheel over the Open Pro is that you have room between the edge of the cover and the braking surface, as you imply. There is very little of that with the Open Pro. This is no problem if you use the disc cover as per the instructions, but there are people who prefer to tape the cover on instead of using the little rivets to attach it. There's just no room for that with the Open Pro. So if taping is a big thing for you, you have to look at another wheel. I have sometimes put tape over the rivets, but I really don't know if this makes any measurable difference.

I have an Open Pro with PT for two seasons and have been very happy with how little maintenance it has required. n=1, of course. :-)
  • I went from a few years on a cxp33 (a slightly deeper hoop) to a Open Pro this year. No difference.

Rationale for open pro was approx. 3 hours on Slowtwitch pouring over "what is best PT wheel for wheelcover" threads, and the popular vote went to the Open Pro.
  • I have an open pro and wheel cover. It works great. No complaints.
