IM AZ 2010 Race Report: AWESOME

Since I maintain a separate blog, I'm going to merely provide you with a link to my race report so I don't write it twice. I would copy it over, but I have a number of videos/pics over there as well. If you want to take a peak, please do. I hope you enjoy it (link below too in case I did not get this to work).

All I can say is the Team EN way rocks. I was confident all day based on the advice I received from everyone, and I was so stoked with my performance. I far exceeded my expectations, and for my first ironman, could not be happier. Thanks to everyone out there that gave me advice and helped make this such a success!!

  • Adam, First - congrats on finishing your 1st Ironman. They are so epic that the thrill does not diminish when you do another. Second - loved your blog and the swim map. You definitely left some time on the table out there. For what it's worth, my 3 Ironman swims were 68 mins @ IMFL, 83 mins @ IMCDA, and 71 mins @ IMAZ. Guess which one I had the panic attack in! I started too far up at IMCDA, was run over repeatedly, and thought I was going to drown early on in the race. For me, the IMAZ swim was getting back on the horse. I seeded myself 4 rows back and had a clean start through 200 yards...then the traffic got very heavy. I felt my self tensing up several times and the fear rising, but consciously worked to calm myself down and just keep swiming. That got me threw the worst of it. If you can swim 72 mins with your experience, I bet you can go 65 mins when you conquer the washing machine! Third - a powermeter might help you out if your HR was spiking all over the place. I didn't use either, but maintained a very constant awareness of my pedal pressure. Overall though, you must have done it right because you had an excellent marathon. Again, congratulations and all the best on your next one ... which is?
  • Adam,

First IM? Way to work through the rough spots and nail that sucker! Well done.

A note: I used to be plagued with frequent peeing during both the bike and the run in an IM. Once I upped my salt intake waaaaay up this stopped. 800-1000mg/hr. My thinking is that my body was in osmotic imbalance and was trying to right that balance through frequent urination. I was able to retain the fluid, my muscles were far happier and I didn't have to slow/stop to pee so much.
  • Adam, great work! I could be wrong but I think there's a way to connect your external blog to the internal EN blog...but don't quote me on that. Enjoy your well-deserved rest!
  • Adam,

Great report and way to persevere after your tough swim start. Once you got going, sounds like your execution was spot on....Congrats and well done!
  • Congrats Adam. I met you briefy in expo area after 4 Keys talk. So. Calif here - let's hook up and ride the Santa Monica Mtns sometime.
  • everyone, thanks again for checking it out. So awesome you read it and came back with some great feedback.

@paul - you crack me up! To be honest, last week, I was thinking, never again. This week, I'm thinking possibly. My biggest concern is the training time. I work in a pretty rigorous job with some hard travel time. I have to do a lot of intl travel, and I have incredible guilt when I miss long workouts. I'm actually a little lost on how to handle it, and as a result, I haven't thought about signing up for another. I have a 70.3 in April and have thought about doing some marathons and maybe another ironman in 2012, but I also have potential engagement soon, then kids, and well, you know how that goes. I'm struggling with what to do. Your tips on swimming though make a lot of sense and it sounds like you pulled off a well planned swim at IM AZ. Your time was awesome and I'm very impressed. Well excecuted! I did go I think slower on the bike then I could have, but I was ok with that given this was my first and I didn't know what to expect on the run. I do plan on purchasing a power meter in the new year image

@bill, i think i will do that in training. Good advice and I have heard that from some other members. Just too close to race day to try that. I also wonder how drinking half of tempe lake influenced that image

@coach i will see about connecting the blogs - if that's the case, that would be cool! Especially since i'll be blogging about running with my awesome dog for the next week, which I know Rich will enjoy.

@JT! thank you! It was awesome!
  • @david thanks! I would love that! some so cal EN love!
  • Adam,

I am only just now beginning to be able to think anything related to a triathlon.  I read your report via your blog - great race!!!  That swim was really something else.  I felt like this year was worse than last year in terms of chaos starting out.  That sucks that it was so harrowing for you.  I remember being really grateful that I had at least experienced something similar before or else I would have been really unhappy too.  So, now you can say you have faced those awful scary thoughts and pulled through with flying colors!!

I was actually wondering if I might be able to somehow get a few of the pics that were up on your flickr slideshow?  There is a set in particular that struck me...  The first pair were taken from the bridge at the swim start looking down on athletes all in their wetsuits entering the water, with the transition & masses of bikes in the background.  And then the second was taken from the bridge looking down on the athletes in the water lining up before the start, with all the spectators crowded in masses on the bridge in front.  I am not sure how you feel about sharing these, but let me know if there might be something we can work out!

Hope you have a fantastic and very relaxing holidays!!
