Incorrect Power readings

Hope someone can help me with this.  I have written to the Powertap folks but have not had a reply back yet.

I have a PT 2.4 with a zipp 808.  There is a particular route I ride frequently and know my watts for a small climb quite well.  Typically, I run about 280 - 300 watts during this two mile climb.  Lately, my PT hub reads 180 - 200 during the same climb.  Everything else is the same (my speed, effort, etc....).  I have zero'd the torque twice and NO help.  Each time, it will read "0" but continue to measure about 100W lower than it should.  Anybody else had this problem?

  • Not me, but keep us posted!
  • Last time I had a funky reading with the PT and had done all the "fixes" like zeroing, resetting, etc. I found out that my chain was actually a little bit broken and my rear derailleur was out of whack which equalled really low readings on the PT. Maybe do a check on your bike to see if there's any slight mechanical issues (mine were so minor that a week went by with me just thinking my PT was broken).
  •  In my experience PT's either work great or they don't.  Whenever a PT starts doing strange thing it is time for it to take a pilgrimage back to its birth place in Wisconsin. Sucks but that is usually the deal.  If it is still in warranty its free and the turn around is excellent.  If its not it cost a few hundred dollars, but the turn around is still great and then you get the latest guts and a new warranty on it.  Seems like they do not fix the things, they just replace them with the latest and greatest.  Good luck.
