Other Lake Placid Training Camp Options?

I’m stressing out about LP training camp options and looking for some advice.

I can’t afford to go to VA for the EBTC in May and the June LP training camp is out due to my son’s wedding that weekend.

-         Does anyone have plans to train in Lake Placid some weekend other than 6/11? Preferably 6/18-19 but could be open to anything.

-         Does anyone have any experience, advice or opinions about joining FireManIronMan’s LP training camps?

-         Are there other LP training camps that I am not aware of?

I know it is still fairly early but I always fear missing out because I waited too long.

  • Carmichael must do one, Fernando Puente, another EN'er, just told me he got into LP this week through them. Might search them out. Thats Lance's coach I think.
  • Very inconsiderate of your son to get married that weekend. Have you asked him to change the date?

The training camp is really nothing other than just a big training weekend and an excuse to drink beer with the team. Every weekend there are lots o f people training in LP. I would not pay anyone to participate in a camp of any sort. You can get hotel rooms super cheap and swim bike and run all you want. There is enough collective wisdom about every IM course in the house that any more is just noise. Assuming you have ever ridden the bike loop there is really not much benefit to traveling up there. That time could be better spent resting. I bet you can find plenty of hills to ride in Maine.

All that said if you are really hard up for someone to ride with up there let me know as I can sneak up there pretty easy and former team member Kevin Lanahan has a place up that way and is around most weekends.
  • @Steve - Check this out,

    http://www.teammossman.com/events_uttc.html

I did their camp this year as well as 2009.  Great group; Clay is well-organized and entertaining.

  • Steve, I wouldn't stress too much about the training camp. If you manage to get out there on any other day in the summer there are enough triathletes doing the course .
I might be going there for memorial day with my wife. I will be doing the bike course at least once. I will have more details around jan/feb a little to early to plan right now.
  • Steve,

Maybe you could rally some local friend / triathlete / cyclists for a planned epic long weekend of biking sometime in the right time frame? I bet there is epically beautiful riding you could do there up in Maine, or how about Quebec, or Vermont Green Mts. or New Hampshire Whites? Beautiful country up there.

  • Steve - I may also be up there for Memorial Day weekend with a group of folks training. We stay at my friend (my old Tri coach whose done LP twice) house, which is right on River Road on the run course. If this happens, I'll see if you are still looking for something to do, provided that weekend works....
  • Wow, EN is awesome! Just got off the deadmill and was stunned by the amount or responses. Thank you all. Tomorrow after I have a chance to really look thru all the suggestions with a calander, I will do a proper response. Till then, thanks to all.
  • I am planning to be there on the weekend of the 18th with a group from Rochester, NY. We are a low key group, you would be more than welcome to tag along. We generally stay at the extremely low budget, no frills Alpine Aire motel. Think 70's shag carpet. Part of the allure.

  • Thanks to all. It is great to have such an excellent resource at hand. I suppose I shouldn’t get too uptight, there are a lot of options out there – especially all the in Haus possibilities.

The short answer is that getting together with others on the team is the best solution out there. I had no idea so many had plans, or would be willing to just show up for a weekend. Between Chris, Atif, J.T., Kevin and possibly others, I will have no problems making it work. After the holidays should be plenty early to solidify my plans.

@ Dave C – looked at the Charmichael camp – pretty pricey. Guess you’re paying for elite coaching. I suspect I get the best coaching right here at EN.

@ Chris G – I know, the audacity of Kyle to be so self centered….. Actually, I intentionally didn’t tell him about my plans. I wouldn’t want him to feel any guilt about the day – it is after all, his big day, not mine.

I don’t want to pay for a camp either, but the idea of going solo, no support isn’t a good one. Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that. Let you know as I figure this out.

No, never biked the course or looked at the run from a run perspective. I do know the area. I spent the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s in the area. That was back during my rock & ice climbing days. January of ’80 I spent 28 days in the High Peaks and summated 13 of the 46ers and covered about 85 miles. Two weeks later we were in town when Team USA beat USSR – just an amazing day in LP!

Initially I didn’t think training at LP was very important because I thought I knew that area well enough. Then I listened to Coach P’s course preview and realized that biking the course was essential for me to avoid major mistakes that would ruin my run.

@ Allassandro – Team Mossman is a pretty good deal. $295 includes meals and lodging for 4 days and 3 nights at 2 meals per day. That’s $100 per day! Be hard to find a room for much less than that.

@ Atif & J.T. – Memorial Day weekend sounds very interesting. That could save me some vacation time. I don’t get many to start with. I will need to speak to the Boss (DW) first before I make plans. I will definitely keep you posted.

@ Beverly – you assume too much….. I don’t have any friends =:-[ ….. I’m actually quite the loner. I work alone and I have always trained alone. In fact I think I had trained for and run 6 marathons before I ever ran with someone that wasn’t in a race! Finding miles here in Maine is not an issue; my need was to find a way to train on the LP course itself. Lots of great ideas for rides though, thanks.

@ Kevin – That weekend (6/18-19) may be one of my best options. Not sure what the boy has planned for a wedding rehearsal and I still want to do Mooseman on 6/5. As I figure this out, I will let you know about the tag-a-long option. I appreciate the offer.

Many possibilities - thanks to everyone. I will get back as soon as I have more details.
  • Steve, my husband and I go up every May (Canada's Victoria Day Weekend). We usually bring up a group from Ottawa. My husband has done the race 3 times and likes to go up for a training weekend in May. You could always come up then and stay in our room?
  • Steve,

You don't "need" support on the LP course. The bike is a loop with an out and back, all in civilization = gas stations for Gatorade, cokes, Snickers, etc. You can even hit a DQ (or similar) at the bottom of the Wilmington climb to get your strawberry shake on and you can park your car right outside the Lake Placid Brewery so you can have a recovery Ubu Ale 30" after racking your bike. If Chris G is up there, look for him kicking it with the ST-crew on the patio in his skinsuit...

  • And be sure to ask for the unofficial cool kids riding routes around LP after you ride the course once and have it memorized. image

    ps thanks TEAM!
  • Steve - Just an additional comment concerning Memorial Day and Rich's post - the Lake Placid Brewery is definitely part of the training plan - with growlers to go to bring back to the house for post ride/run warm ups before heading into town for dinner/drinks....image
  • @ Brenda - Thanks for the offer. If I do make it that weekend, it's likely I'd get a room somewhere so I can snore to my hearts content. I'll let you know.

@ Coach Rich - seems like things have changed in the 25+ years since I stomped around that place. Back then it was hard to find anything a mile away from any town up there. There was a saying around the region then "you can't even buy a job around here".

@ Coach P - I bet those 'ccol kids routes' begin, end and make pit stops at establishment that provide alcoholic beverages...... don't they?

@ J.T. - I could be the designeated driver.... years ago I drank a weeks worth of beer every night. That lasted almost 30 months..... not a pretty sight. But yeah, I can be the DD for sure.

Thanks to all for everything. I feel better and will revisit this after the first of the year. By then I will know what I can and cannot do.

Run Strong my friends, run strong....
  • Last year I stayed at the KOA campground on a tent site that had power(for the Microwave, coffee machine, and small refrig) for my training weekends. The campground was cheap with good amenities, and had a ton of other triathletes. The weekends often had at least 50-100 people out there on the bike course. Memorizing the course does have its advantages, especially when you get tired. It is great to know that it is the little road marker past the power pole on the top of the Jay climb when it starts to go back down hill!
  • @ Tina - I contacted the condo owner of where I will be on race week and it looks like I will be staying there with a non-EN friend. Not as cheap as KOA, but then I get a full kitchen and should end up costing about the same or less than a motel room.

It is a nice 2 bedroom place on rt 73 just out of town but before the airport. It's on both the bike and run courses and only about a 15 minute walk to the start/finish. Which makes it nice for family and spectating on race day. Getting a chance to go there early will make it like home during race week.

Plans as they now stand are to:
Do both Olympic & HIM at Mooseman on 6/4 - 6/5. (mostly for fun but get to practice pacing in the face of others passing me - out of the saddle!)
Do my son's Cape Cod wedding on 6/11
    Do a 4 day camp at LP 6/16 - 6/19

Going to be a very, very busy June!
