  •  Halligan - super heroes do not cry, or whine or complain.  Stop it and crank out some watts, would ya!

  • Linda,

Let me tell you how this conversation morphed into a Anthony Robbins/Zig Ziglar/Bob Proctor positive self talk inside my head---it is the CURSE OF MARIA MULDAUR'S "MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS" song.  If you are too young to recognize the song do yourself a favor and never mention it again.

If you ever download THAT song from iTunes, Midnight At the Oasis will rattle in your brain like the earwig alien thing  from Star Trek:Wrath of Khan.  (If you don't get my references-don't worry it just the lunatic rantings of a Gene Wilder Dr. Frankenstein mind.........  I am going to put on my aluminum foil hat on so the alien signals won't reach me.  If you are smiling now, I made my point.  I love all of the obscure references in this post.  I fell like Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football.  If you understood what he was referencing, it was brilliant.  Most people did not enjoy his humor.

Wow....there are so many things in there I've never heard of I don't even know where to start. Jim, is this back when you were watching the radio?????

  • Al, I can't wait for your January lecture series!
  • Calling Nemo...please find the "Stuck in My Head" thread. My wife always brings up the theme song from Gilligan's Island..."NOW, sit right down and you'll hear a tale..." You're welcome!

Yikes, that's a mighty tall order!  Might be better if we let that one quietly slip away

We're all going to get back on the horse and do great!!!...

I know Linda's getting some wisdom; comes with ( I hate to say it) ... age.

Evey year, I moan inwardly as I read about "pain", "suffering", "agony", "fear". And such downward pointing words.

Try these self-images in your visualization about the FTP intervals:

"I feel so POWERFUL as I do this!" "I can feel the STRENGTH pouring thru me when I WORK."

If you're going to do the Jan OS with me, be prepared for more lectures on the power of positive thinking, and the real joy of reveling in your sweat.

Al & Linda- just want to thank you both for the constant reminders of the power of positive thinking.  I did a ride yesterday with 3x8' intervals (lots of rest between) in my prep for the Jan OS.  At one point I looked at the watch to see 3 min left to go in the interval and I was thinking "Oh man this hurts, how will I do 2x20 if I can't get through 8 minutes, etc etc etc".........

And then I remembered this thread.  So I stopped my self and changed the internal dialog to "You are doing great, good work, you've got it, etc etc etc"...... and ya know what?  OK, I didn't get a huge watt bump and birds and bunnies didn't come out of no where to sing happy songs to me, but the effort really did almost instantly feel a little less easier.  It wasn't easy, it was still work, but it was less stressful work.

I'm not sure I'm articulating this very well.  But my point is- please continue to beat me and everyone else here over the head about the power of positive thoughts, images, and words.  It really does help.

  • Great thread here.  Thanks for the posts and thoughts.

A couple of quotes I like:

"If you think you can or think you can't, you are probably right."  Henry Ford

"Do you really think my muscles have anything to do with my being faster and stronger?" Morpheus - The Matrix

Life really is a game of inches....................enjoy the journey....................

  • So today on the trainer I was thinking "I'm so lucky to be able to do this! How many people would give anything to have the time and the bike and the trainer and the supportive husband so they could spend part of their Sunday playing on a bike??" And you know - it was a great reminder of the proper perspective for things, and made the ride feel way easier. Thanks guys!
