The what I am drinking right now thread

We have a book thread so figured we should have a beer/wine thread.  We can drop some beer/wine knowledge to go along with our racing/training knowledge exchange.  Thanks to Jennifer and Beth for the assist in getting this started.  I think I will build off of this to hopefully start a beer exchange thread as the beer of the month club idea didn't seem to really take off, plus it was probably gonna be too expensive relative to what we can do on our own.

So I will start.  Last night I had my first drink of the week.  An Ithaca Flower Power IPA.  www.ithacabeer.com/beers.php#3 A lovely hoppy little brew.  Has become a favorite of mine when I am just looking for a 6 pack of something low in ABV.  It's only 7.5% !  When I first saw it I thought it couldn't be good.  I mean what comes out of Ithaca besides hotel managers?  Well I guess my wife did go to Cornell Law...

Back to the beer.  Highly rec it.  It isn't too malty which sometimes doesn't sit well with me in my IPAs.  I love me some hops and it certainly provides a nice crisp hop flavor.

Something makes me think I will be on this thread a lot reading and updating.

So, what are you drinking EN?

  • Been all over the Moose Drool by Big Sky, lately. Great stuff.

Last night, found a local bar that had $1 domestics...ALL domestics. Including Fat Tire, Sierra Nevadas, and Shiner. Had several beers, and came away with a $5 tab. I think i'll be going back there every Wednesday after crushing myself on the drainer.
  • I mentioned this in the other thread. I'm obsessed with Knot Stock by Furthermore. Sold in Minn, Wisc, and Penn only. During Thanksgiving pulled off I-90 to take a case back home. I hate you Wisconsin for not distributing this goodness below the cheddar curtain.

A.P.A that finishes with a black pepper taste. After three of these, your lips get a little tingly from the black pepper. I've coined the beer "Embro for your lips"

    http://www.furthermorebeer.com/beer/1

    http://twitter.com/FurthermoreBeer

    Availability: Year-Round. ABV: 5.5%

Black, cracked, stuffed in a sack, boiled and cold-infused. The real treat of our A.P.A. is the tangle of flavors that fresh cracked pepper and Northern Brewer Hops create. At 65 IBUs (bitterness units) there's plenty of zing for the Hop Heads or Bitter Bettys, but not so much to overpower the tingle of the black pepper as it slowly kicks in. Likewise, the 15° Plato malt bill features a healthy dose of caramel malt meant to soften (but not stifle) the play of pepper and hops on the palate.

Still have a few left from Thanksgiving. It will soon be time to head North for a beer run

    GOLD!!

I found a package store about a mile away with a great beer selection. I have a La Trappe Quadrupel Trappist Ale cued up for tonight, I think.

And I may schedule the annual meeting of the HeMan WomanHaters Club soon -- boys only, chili, carne asada, fire, dogs, and BYOB tasty beer to share/sample.

  • This time of year my favorite is Sam Adams Winter brew.  The other night I found a new beer Rock Top Amber Ale, very good, had a sweet follow through for an amber.  This past week I have had two friends mention how good Moose Drool was.  Tomorrow after work I am going by the store to grab a six pack and give it a try.

Hayes, you need a beer mule!  Sounds like a good beer, though a little weak

No Moose Drool out by me my friend.  Hearad great things about it.  Gonna have to look for it at CDA in 2011!  And $1 beers?  That is awesome!  My local bar just went upscale with the beers finally!  Have Stone Arrogant Bastard, Dale's Pale Ale, Dogfish Head 60min IPA to name a few.  So happy.  I wish they were $1!

  • Hayes - I'll be passing through Chicago around Christmas 22nd or 23rd. You tell me where to buy it in MN and I'll bring you a case.

  • I started my nightly sampling after Thanksgiving.. . .

    Sam Adams Winter Collection
Winter's Bourbon Cask Ale (surprisingly from Anheuser Busch)
    Kona Brewing Co.

Not sure what I'll pick up this weekend but it will be yummy.

Well let us know what you are picking up and drinking Matt.  Unfortunately no Kona up here in NJ.  Have you tried some Heavy Seas from Baltimore?  Good shit.

Tonight I have had a Westmalle Tripel.  Damn those monks know how to brew good beer.  Then a Rogue Yellow Snow IPA, a big time pass from me from now on.  Then a Stone, Double Bastard Ale.  Wow, what a big beer.  Not for the faint of heart.  11+% ABV.  Love it.  Probably about to open a Chocolate Stout, not sure form whom though.

  • @ Scott stopped at the store after work today and picked up a six pack of Moose Drool.  Nice call, very tasty.  As I got home from work an unnamed delivery company pulled up in front of my house at the same time and delivered my Cinqo quarq. So on a Friday night as I entered my home I had a six pack of Moose Drool under one arm and a new power meter under the other.

  •  It would have to be Tuborg Julebryg (Christmas beer) right now for me!  My favorite part about it is the celebration when it is released: www.visitdenmark.com/uk/en-gb/menu/...uleoel.htm.  Definitely puts you in the Christmas spirit!

Not a bad way to start the weekend!

    Moose Drool and Power!

Agreed, fantastic way to start the weekend!

  • Finishing up the saranac winter pack. The vanilla stout is quite good.
  • Working on a New Belgium Tripple as I watch football.

Have you tried the Samuel Adams Imperail Series. Sme excellent beers. My favorite is the Imperial White. Its not a light beer!!!!!!
  • My legs are nicely sore from this weekend's workouts, and I'm sitting in front of the fire sipping a scotch. Not beer I know, but still from malted barley. Nectar of the gods.
  • Current fave is the Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA. The 60 minute is good, but the 90 minute is sensational!
  • @Keith - This year's Saranac holiday mix is really good. Every type in it is excellent.

2X on th Dogfish 90 !!  Excellent IPA!!!

  • @Adam, have you had any beers from Mikkeller?  They make some really good stuff and are from Denmark I believe.

@Mike, 90 min is a ridiculous beer!  Love it.  You should try a 120 minute IPA just for the hell of it once.  But please, no operation of heavy machinery after that.

@Keith, a great sampler is always a good thing.

@Matt, I have only tried a couple of the Sam Imperial series.  They were ok.  To me, Sam beers mostly taste the same so I have been staying away from them.  Have you tried Schlafy?  I hear good things about them.

I guess I have been remiss in my posting this weekend so here was my lineup:

Friday started with a Westmalle Tripel.  Just a fantastic beer.  Those monks really can brew great beer.  Highly, highly recommend this beer.  9.5% ABV I believe.  www.trappistwestmalle.be/en/page/tripel.aspx

Then I went with a Rogue Yellow Snow IPA.  I won't be drinking this again.  Not enough hops for this guy.  I even wondered if I was drinking an IPA at one point.  www.rogue.com/beers/yellow-snow-ipa.php

After that it was a Stone Double Bastard.  Lovely beer but not for everyone.  Very agressive beer and darker than I usually go with.  10.5% ABV and loved every sip of it.  Getting a keg of this for my holiday party next Saturday provided it is still there.  www.stonebrew.com/doublebastard/

Saturday brought a whole new slate of beers.  After my bike workout I grabbed a can of 21st Amendment IPA.  What a lovely beer.  Who would have known beer in a can could be so good?  www.21st-amendment.com/beer/brew-free-or-die-ipa

Then I went to a party accross the street where the host told me of this great beer he was able to find, Flying Fish Exit 16.  It's a series put out by a New Jersey brewery and this version is an Imperial IPA that is fantastic but very hard to find.  So when i went to the cooler I could not find any of it.  I found it quit odd.  So I had a Harpoon IPA as it was the lesser of many evils.  Other choices were miller lite and Heineken.  I don't like skunked beers so I chose the Harpoon.

So after finding no Exit 16 I asked my host where it was and he told me he wasn't sharing, then why tell me about it, so I decided to go to my house for a beer.  Selected a Stone Lucky Bastard.  What a tasty beer.  Limited edition.  It is a mixture of their Arrogant Bastard, Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard and the Double Bastard.  Was phenomenal.  Need to go grab a few more bottles before it sells out.

After finishing that I went back home and grabbed a Southern Tier Choklat.  Such a fantastic stout with a big dose of chocolate thrown in.  Definitely a must try simply for the taste.  Have always loved it.  www.southerntierbrewing.com/beers.html

Well that was my weekend of drinking.  Hope you are all enjoying the thread.

  • I didn't feel like evening beers Fri/Sat, but I just picked up Saranac's Adirondack Trail Mix six-pack. Tonight I'm having the Black & Tan and my gf will probably try something of lighter fare.. I'll report back later.

@ Tucker: I like Arrogant Bastard so I'll keep my eye out for SLB
  • I tweeted this to you, Tucker but I bought a 6 of Wisconsin Amber by Capital Brewery. Pretty decent. I need to try the dogfishhead, we can get it but the closest hy-vee is 26 miles away. It is on my list. I have had a lot of call lately so no beer.
  • Is no one else out there drinking?

Here was my weekend of debauchery!

Started actually early Friday morning when I got home from work.  It was after midnight and I needed to wrap some presents for my Christmas party Saturday afternoon.  So I opened a St Bernardus Christmas Ale.  Loved it and apparently I am not the only one!  www.ratebeer.com/beer/st-bernardus-christmas-ale/65814/  A 99 rating.  Nice and dark and gave you that warm feeling you need during the holidays!  Pick one up if you can before they run out.

Friday was my office party and was a wine night, well mainly wine.  We had an imperial of Far Niente '99.  I think it needed to open up more, and warm up slightly as well ubt was good.  Not great like it should have been for the price, $2,400!!!  Glad I didn't pick up the check.

Saturday brought my party.  Started off small and innocent and now in its fourth year and I think we had like 80ish people.  Special shout out to JT Thompson who played Santa.  Hopefully his legs will heal up in time so he can crush CDA with the rest of us from EN.  I bought a keg of Dogfish Head 60min IPA.  Good session beer, at least for me.  6% ABV.  www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-b...te-ipa.htm  A good starter beer for those trying to get into the craft beer scene.  But a funny thing happened, the increase in people led to a increase in beer consumption.  The keg got kicked.  Had never happened in years passed so we had to dip into my private stock.  All my big bottles were drank.  So upset but it was for a great cause.  Quick highlights of the big bottles:

Flying Fish Exit 16 - NJ brewery who has put out a big bottle series.  Easily the best.  It's an Imperial IPA made with Rye.  Only sad part is that they don't make it anymore and you need to scramble to find it in stores.  I may have found a good lead and need to go clean this place out.  www.flyingfish.com/beers/exit_series.html

Flying Fish Exit 13 - This is a chocolate stout.  It is tasty, though not nearly as good as my beloved Souther Tier Choklat.

Brooklyn Black Ops - Still trying to get my head around this.  The beer geeks all rave about it.  It's a stout aged in bourbon barrels.  I still don't know what I think of it.  You certainly got that bourbon taste in it.  Limited edition beer as it is only brewed once a year.  www.ratebeer.com/beer/brooklyn-black-ops/82103/

These were just the ones I got to drink.  My others I did not.  Very sad.

So who drank something good this weekend?  Patrick?  I saw you tweeted a beer, let's hear about it!

  • Visited my parents for the weekend.  They're not drinkers.   While doing some cleaning in their basement, I stumbled across an old unopened bottle of IW Harper Bourbon.  And by old, I mean the PA dept of revenue tax stamp on the cap said "1948"!  How much 62+ y/o, stored-in-a-dark-cool-basement bourbon is out there?  Needless to say, I skipped the beers yesterday.

  • Resurrecting this thread to add my piece. The holidays were good to me. I'm a Scotch drinker and I received a lovely bottle of Johnnie Blue (not single malt but still delicious), and had a glass of my coveted Macallan 21 to ring in the new year.

Pic of the current Scotch table (guarded by my trusty wooden giraffe):
