Wildflower or not?

I've had to change my plans for next year due to work (going to Las Vegas for 6 weeks). I had been planning to due a local 1/2 the 1st weekend in May. Now I'm looking on the West Coast. Wildflower looks like the only one that fits but it's ~7 hours away from LV and I'd be leaving Fri afternoon from work and the race is Sat. So I have some questions and looking for team input (thanks R)...

1) With drive time do you think that doing the race is good idea? There really isn't any other HIM (that I could find) going on during the time I'm out there (April 25-June 2) except for Auburn 1/2 and my girlfriend's coming out that weekend so no-go on that.

2) If I race it, what would you recommend for lodging (camp/ hotel)? Taking into consideration that I'll be arriving midnight-ish on Fri

3) Any other suggestions/comments for other races, thoughts on just doing self supported half?

Thanks

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

I wouldn't recommend WF with that travel schedule. Notes:

    • WF is friggin' tough, especially the run. I always say that WF is a great race to register for, because it will put the fear of god into you with your run training. An unprepared run on that course is just...mean...like prison mean. Not sure I would want to jump out of car at midnight after a 8+hr drive (I think 7 is ambitious, LV is 275mi from me and WF is exactly 250mi from my house) and onto that run course 12hrs later.
    • WF is friggin' fun, but it's the camping that's fun. You'll miss out on a lot of the experience if you do the hotel thing, in my opinion.
  • I agree with Rich. Not a good choice due to your arrival time. Not sure if you can register race am? That is the type of race you want to arrive Thurs night or early Fri for a Sat race. Maybe consider the Olympic distance on Sunday. Great course, very hard!
