Sore hip from pushups?

Question: My DW is working on the 100 pushup challange with me. This week she started with some hip discomfort - right at the front of the hip socket. Can this be related to pushups?

Thanks

  • Could be her psoas. Leigh might be better able to tell you.
  • Doing a pushup is similar to doing a plank, which works the abs and hip flexors. It's possible to overdo it like most anything else. Could be related. Has she been doing anything else?
  • Brenda, Mike, thanks for the ideas.

Yeah Mike, she is doing a walk-run on the deadmill, but she has been doing that 3x a week for several weeks. I was thinking it was a simple soreness from the plank position too. Initially she seemed fairly concerned ( I was less so) but late this afternoon Carole seemed better about it. Not gone, but improved.

    Thanks again. EN rocks!
  • Much more likely that it's her dreadmill stuff. image unless she really has an arched back with the pushups would be super hard to get a hip flexor strain out of that. Possible? sure, but unlikely. watch her position to be sure.
  • @ Leigh - thanks. In either case her symptoms are subsiding. Still there but more as a nuisance than injury. Initially it was bad enough for me to be concerned (though not as much as she was) but tonight there is definite improvement. She even did her Monday pushup set this AM with only minor discomfort.

Her pushup position is actually very good. Feet hip width apart, on toes, legs and torso straight. Saging or arching not acceptable. From the beginning I worked hard to convince her that if she couldn't hold form, then she needed to stop. I follow the same guidlines for most of my fitness activitie.
  • stretch and foam roll that hip to kick it for sure! hips like to stay cranky so the soft tissue work will go a long way in keeping the sx away. image
