First Week of OS - Run Test

I am starting my first week of the OS today with the bike test.

I have the run test on Wednesday - is it feasible / accepptable to do the run test on a treadmill?

Comments

  • Bill- if it's likely you'll be doing most of your OS runs on that same treadmill, then yes- it' OK to do the test on the 'mill. And if this is happening in a gym, try to use that same 'mill as often as possible. They are all calibrated a bit differently, so you just can't trust the pace too much.

However, if you are planning on doing most of your running outside and this detour inside is a unique event, then I'd recommend postponing the test until you can get outside.

  • I also do all of my OS on the treadmill. I actually like it because I can push myself really really hard, which benefits me once I get outside (pretty telling myself to suck it up since I had no problem with certain paces on the t-mill image).
  • Second what Nemo and Jennifer said...
I've been doing my tests on the treadmill...I don't have a consistant, flat, 5K running route outside my front door and I didn't want to run around a track...Especially in January and Feb..I chose the Treadmill for my tests and do lots of my OS run work on the treadmill these days.
  • Oh- and Bill, I'll just put one little plug in for you to wait 3 weeks and join us in the January OS group. It's going to be a kick ass group of people! :-)
  • @Nemo, January is already massive...you guys are going to have too much fun!!!

  • How do most people do the run test? I am lucky enough to have access to a track, a 1km pretty-flat packed-dirt oval, treadmill, and of-course a road-course with rolling hills. Last year, working off the training plan, I used the track.
  • I use the track at the university. Close by, nice surface, but most of all it allows uniform test conditions. Well except for weather.... But heck, this is Maine and everyday is a nice day here!
  • I don't use the track as I find it a mental drain counting laps. I just go out and run, which includes some slight inclines/declines, but nothing I'd consider rolling. I can handle the treadmill for about 30 minutes before I'm bored out of my skull- I'd rather run in the cold.
  • @Brett, use what you will test yourself on the most. There is no exact science.
  • I own a treadmill and that's what I do the run test on. The temps around here get pretty extreme so I like that the climate is "controlled". Plus I cannot run around a track due to prior hip injuries. I've known at least a few people who have/develop hip problems when running in circles on a track - even when changing direction. Something to keep in mind. My TM feels harder than outdoor running (probably mental) so when I do get outside it's nice how easy it feels.

I did every run outside last year.  The only exception is when it's too snowy I'll cross country ski instead.  Only had to do that twice.  Thankfully my city clears the running trail REALLY well.  I love running outside in the snow!  Had a few runs last year in below zero temps, but I've collected enough cold-weather clothes to keep me toasty warm.  Finding the right gloves is the key.  I also heard for dudes that windbreaker underwear are a necessity.

For testing, I run on a track until it's snow covered, and then I'll change to a trail around a lake near my house that's really flat.

Come down here in the summer and run in the 90-95+ degree 90+ percent humidity swamp.  It's disgusting.  Plus, temp changes do change your run ability.  I can guarantee you I'll run a 5K faster in 50 degree weather than in 90 degrees with 95 percent humidity.  That's why I like the treadmill.  I consider coastal California weather non extreme for testing purposes.

All meant in good fun Andi and I thought you were refering to winter in Georga...

You are definitly right about running in the heat.  One of the reasons I live in the north is I can't take the heat. Living in cooler temps most of my life I find running in the 70' too warm, in the 80's I suffer massively, and I think if I ran a 5K in the 90's you'd need a stick and a spoon to get me off the gound at the finish line - if I even made it that far!  This past summer I think we had 3 days above 90!  Major heat wave for Maine!

Besides, there is no shame in using a treatmill - I often do.  Sometimes for weather, other times it is just more convienient to go down to the pain cave and run watching something on TV.....

    Run Strong

  • I go outside and find the flattest course and//or closest 5k event that I can run. Non-flat 5k is usually faster with competition out there. image B/c of my schedule I'll be testing on the road this week...but then home in a few more...so I just do what I can. I often train inside during the week, but I will always re-jigger my testing week to get the run in outside!
  • University indoor 300 m track. Same all year.

I have only run a few 5K races, but never run one faster than on this track, ironically.
