Joule 2.0 with Cadence/Speed sensor question.

I just got my Quarq with a Joule 2.0 and speed sensor. I have two questions.

1.  Is anybody using the speed sensor?  Mine did not come with any directions.  Not that it is to hard to figure out, I'm just concerned about the placement on the wheel.  ie; towards the middle or out to the edge?  I called Saris, they were not much help, the rep acually went outside and looked at how they have it set up on their bikes.  He said it doesn't matter.  I just find it hard to beleive, if you are tracking speed wouldn't it show faster the closer you get to the center of the wheel vs the outer part of the wheel?  It will read the magnet a heck of a lot more times toward the center than the outside.  Just wondering where your placement is.

2.  I went on my first ride yesterday.  Turned the Joule on, said it was looking for the power meter.  started showing my watts and cadence.  It then kept going into sleep mode after 5 minutes.  Then I noticed it was not showing any time for the ride.  After turning it on and pushing many buttons trying to get it to work I gave up and just used my 310XT that I had with me.  The rep didn't have an explanation for me.  Anybody else ever have this happen?  I figure I am just a knuckle head and it's something very simple I am missing.

Thanks for any feedback.

  • David,

    1. In the Joule setup you tell it the circumference of the wheel, in milimeters. It then knows that in one revolution of the wheel you've traveled xxxx mm and it uses this to calc speed. One rev is one rev, whether the magnet is near the hub or the rim.

    2. Sorry, can't help with this one. If Saris isn't helpful recommend you call Wheelbuilder, as we got the Joule from them...but call Saris first.
  • Thanks Rich, that makes total sense.  I don't know why the rep didn't point that out.  One more reason to be thankful of  the Haus.  I got the sensor all set up and I think I solved the other problem.  Will know tomorrow when I ride.

    thanks

  • david:

    regarding point #2:

you can set the quarq to stay on in response to speed or heart rate.  if it does not receive signal from whichever mode you set it to, it will go to sleep.  if you forget your HR strap and have it set to HR, then you have to change it over to speed.

make sure the speed sensor is set to speed, not cadence (switch under battery of cadence/speed sensor) and once you pair all the sensors, make sure to activate them all.

finally, i found that a more powerful magnet works best with this sensor, otherwise i keep getting dropped signal and the default is a max speed of 99mph, which messes up the avg speed for the ride.  the magnet that worked best for me was the mavic sensor designed for ksyrium wheels.  as long as you ride bladed spokes, this magnet will work.

    hope this helps!

  • hi again david,  sorry meant to say you can set the joule to respond to speed or HR, not the 'quarq'.  although, i do use a quarq with the joule.

  • @ Gilberto: thanks for the tips.  For my first ride I had not set up my heart rate monitor (which I have now done).  At the time I had not installed the speed sensor (which I have now done).  Did a ride this morning for an hour Looks like everything worked.  It is uploading now.  Great idea for the sensor battery.  I have this on my rode bike which has bladed spokes.  I had to put the magnet all the way at the edge of the wheel and lean the sensor way in (lookes like a problem waiting to happen).  I will definitly try the Mavic.

    Thanks

It should not matter, the inside of the wheel makes a turn just as fast as the outside of the wheel. The amount of times turns circles doesn't change.
  • Hey David (or anyone else out there!)

Now that you've had a couple of weeks with this Quarq/Joule setup, got any tips?  I just received mine.  Setting it up this week.  Since you just went through this recently, I figure the learning curve is fresh in your mind.   Directions seem pretty straightforward, but there's always something that sticks out as ...'huh?'.

Also, what 'dashboard' setup on the Joule works best for what we're doing?

    Got any tips?

    Thx,

    Chris

  • Congrats on the Joule.  I have only done a couple rides with it due to the holidays.  One big thing, make sure you activate all your sensors after you connect to each one.  I didn't at first.  I missed that line in the instructions but Gilberto pointed it out to me.  I am still having issues with the heart rate monitor, I am using the Garmin heart rate strap it is showing up but when I down load it, no info.  Not a big deal as i'm more interested in the power obviously.  Maybe this weekend I will sit down and mess with it.  When you are done you have to remember to go in and stop and save it.

As for my set up on the left side going down:  Watts, MPH, Ride Time.  Right side going down: TSS, CAD, % Grade.  I am finding I leave the cursor over the TSS window so at the bottom I can see Normal Power and IF most often.

There are several other good posts with lots of info on them too.
