Training Tire

OMG putting a training tire on the indoor trainer....like night and day. Who knew I'd actually enjoy an indoor ride and would want to stay on my bike longer...to the point where I didn't go xc ski today.  Wow what a difference.  I pushed higher watts at a lower HR.

Curious..what makes this type of tire so special compared to your normal tire (I had a freshie Conti 3000 on the wheel.... although my tire of choice for outside is Michelin pro race 3s...those babies are smooth like better.)

Have to laugh...went into bathroom to put on chami butter before ride...in pain cave procrasination started painting my nails (black). Nothing like sitting in your chami butter slippery bike shorts giving yourself a mani.  LOL

  • I really like the trainer tire just because it shows so little wear after several years of use. I also do not generate the black tire dust with the trainer tire.

I don't know about any increase in power via changing tires, but then again I have never painted my nails black before heading downstairs for a ride.

I am willing to give the black nails a try however, if you think it will help.

Nice image!  Thanks for the laugh

  • so how many watts do you think black nails will give me?
  • Agreed, I love my training tire. It is much more quiet and a smoother ride. I got one because I was riding a cont. GP4 and after a couple indoor rides it started to show splits and cracks. I can't say I get better power, but at least I am not worried about trashing another perfectly good road tire.
  •  Think the wattage gain would be equal with hands versus toes??  I'm thinkin' toes should be good for a few watts over the hands.  Heck, half of my toes are black most of the time already.... and not just because I live in San Francisco!!

  • Use an old tire for trainer and have pink toe nails (daughter wanted to play "spa"), but not sure which is making me faster/stronger or slower/weaker!

  • Yay for spa dad!!! I tried taking a pick of the black nail polished fingers...with my red EN wristband of course...but my hands looked to old. Could not find the right angle to make photo post worthy.  LOL.

New tire and chami/main story great for party chatter last night.

Maybe felt better also because started taking MAP (that Dave Scott amino acid supplement) again. Used to only take it during season but this OS stuff is hard work.

Ok time for regular work and then sub xc ski for run. First ski of the season. Yippee.

    Happy Sunday to you all.

Oh...brown polish on toes.  Only black toe nail I ever had was not from Ironman, but dropping mirror on toe.

  •  I bought and used a trainer tire last year. It was orange, Michelin thing. Anyway- it shredded really bad- even causing the adjustment knob to bind up. I decided to stick with some old road tire I have that is worn smooth and doesn't shred.

Sorry, I don't get manicures, but I did get a pedi on TG. Pretty red polish. I am getting ready for a new pedi. Not wanting to do it myself in winter.

  • The indoor tires are much better for my setup as well, much smoother and the thing is thick.  I did some xc skiing yesterday too.  Great day yesterday.

  • I'm "this close" to getting another PT wheel for my tri bike so I can just set that on the trainer and be done with it for the winter (using the road bike outside as the weather permits- and as much as possible). Once I complete that task I'll either be throwing an old used tire on the wheel or might be interested in picking up a trainer tire.

Pam= what is the name/brand of the tire your using?

As for nails, I'm still just waiting for the polish I put on my toes for a party almost 8 months ago to just come off already so I can be done with it. My mani/ pedi Fu is very weak!
  •  Continental Training Tire.

Wow 8 months. That's some pedi!!!!

  • I just put a Conti trainer tire on and the first ride was fine. The second ride - millions of little yellow pieces of tire. 1 hour ride wore the tire tread flat. How does that happen? Did I have the resistance to tight?
  • @Terry
I put one on my road bike/traiiner in November and I have not had any problems with it. It gets a nice black stipe down the middle, but still holding up. I check the tire pressure in both tires pretty regularly, so you may check that out. I typically run 110-120 psi.
  • I HATE CONTI TRAINER TIRES!!! I find them impossible to get on. I'm not embarrassed to admit coming to tears over the damn thing. The LBS guy has to do it and we usually don't even exchange words - I hand over the half-on tire with steam coming out of my ears, he gets it on in two seconds. Once on though, yeah, trainer tires are fine.
  • They are a pain to get on but I think it is worth it. Some people say to put them in the dryer for a few minutes first, but I've never tried it.

Mine also had what seemed like thousands of little yellow shavings come off the first few times I used it, but ever sine then it has worked great.
  • I will second that Conti is difficult to get on. In fact, it will make you question yourself as to if you really know how to change a tire!
  • I use a Specialized Armadillo tire as my rear training tire and really like it.  I am able to use it when riding my trainer or riding outdoors.  Due to the weight, before a race, I change it out and put on a lighter tire (Bontrager Race X Lite Pro).

  • I put a trainer tire on this year. I swear I was in the garage for an hour and wasn't any farther getting it on thasn when I started. Then all of the sudden it just snapped on. I don't know. I have really liked usung it on the trainer. No wattage increase but no rubber dust or mess either.
